MS170 Issue

So I bought a MS170. Wanted a small light saw. It has sat without fuel. Anyway won’t start. Replaced carb with factory Zama Stihl. Won’t start. It will start when put fuel in cylinder. It is like the carb is not pulling fuel. The fuel line I pushed it way on. Ran for 30 seconds. Plan on zip tie it on to carb.

What am I missing.

Is your fuel line torn somewhere? Is your fuel filter plugged?

Fuel filter is clean. This is basically a new saw. I don’t see any damage to fuel line. I did think maybe a small leak somewhere. But it’s not visible. Do u think replace fuel line.

I read somewhere that Stihl had problems with the carbs. Was the not starting the problem. Do they have an updated carb. Maybe dealer sold me a non updated carb.

It seems you have starting problem.

When hot, after you put fuel in cylinder, can you restart it once you turn it off after it has warmed up couple of minutes ?

Just curious, how did you choose ms170 over lets say ms172 or ms182 ? ( by the way i have ms170 that i am happy with, bought 4 years ago)

No even when warm same issues.

I bought the MS170 because it was cheap. I think was on sale and I paid maybe $160 OTD. I have since bought Echo CS400 for $179 at HD. Way better saw. It starts.

A buddy who runs a tree removal company use to buy ms170. Said great saws. Use for small stuff says last 2-3 years if lucky than he throws away when worn out. He won’t repair them when something breaks.

I keep repairing mine ms170 for educational and entertainment purposes. But lately it has become only educational. )

If you open carb and look inside.

or

Get new carb, fuel line, and fuel filter, replace it and see what happens.

It is easy to replace imo.

I presume you know Stihl starting procedure.

You can prime it by slowly pulling starter rope in choke position.

You could check independently if spark plug is creating spark consistently.

Already put new carb on. The old carb I opened up. Looked spotless. Cleaned back together same problems. The carb was $50. Fuel line $20 so almost half of what I paid for saw. I am a Stihl guy but I just not sure I will buy another. Anyone had any luck calling Stihl. They use to be helpful.

Remove fuel filter to try if that solves it.

Otherwise it may have to do with ignition module.

How long did it run, once you started it with fuel in the cylinder ?

Imho, you should run it a few minutes for troubleshooting purposes.

Than repeat at least once to see if the same thing happens.

Than when hot try to start it again.

Things like that could help troubleshooting procedure.

I did notice it ran for about a minute with fuel tank completely full. Then when fuel level dropped it cut off. I might try pulling fuel line out.

You mean fuel filter ?

It takes a while for fuel level to drop. Even slower if at idle.

Did yoy tilt chainsaw ?
