I've got a line on a good looking ms 360 with a broken crank. Will any parts, like a crank, from an 036 fit or did they change them a lot? 'Bout what does a used crank run if I could find one? It in a saw shop right now, been sitting there a month with a $400 repair estimate on it. I don't think the owner is terribly interested in getting it fixed. I about died when I pulled the air cover off, that poor ol air filter looked like it had never been cleaned as it had about five pounds of crap on it! Didn't get to talk to the shop owner, just his son but the son sure was ready for it to go! Going back tommorrow to see what it will take to get it.

I've been looking for a candidate to start playing with but I can't bring myself to do any of the saws I have right now they all run great. This might be the one if it is cheap enough.

Yes, the 036 crank will fit. You'll likely need new case bearings as well as seals. I just did one just like that recently, and will be doing another tomorrow. Used cranks go from $10 to $75 depending on seller and condition.... and there are lots around. New.. $261 list.

I'm glad to hear the 036 will fit that makes for a lot more options. What causes failure like this? I would think with the filter plugging up it would make it run rich like the choke being on and not really hurt much, obviously I'm not right otherwise this saw wouldn't be in the shop.

OK, what breaks a crank then? I'm tryin to learn my way through this and it won't be quick. Thank you for your help!

When you pull it over there is no resistance and a slight ting, ting, ting sound as it rolls over. I would think that would be the sound of one end of the crank hitting the other as it goes 'round. But I've been wrong before. The handwritten estimate on the saw was hard to make out but the one I definatley read was "Crankshaft $2xx " It's bad when the bill isn't even legible!

Don't know exactly the failure mechanism, but I've seen a couple of 036's with broken cranks - they break right at the back of the flywheel. I posted pics of one a while back. The break looked like traditional metal fatigue. Maybe an out of balance flywheel (does it have all its fins?), maybe it was put on with an air wrench excessively over-torque.. just guessing.

It's a lot of work to replace a crank and more so if you don't have the stihl shop tools. Bearings aren't cheap either, particularly the clutch side. Often you are better off just buying another used, but complete crankcase on Ebay - I see 036 crankcases for $25-$50 often

What is the piston and bore like?
