all that work and you put it back together with dirty grungy handle, Brad are you ok?

project sounds like fun

Well, the saw is running:) It doesn't look like it's going to get a popup either. Compression is already 180 cold with only a couple minutes of warm up time on it! It was 170 hot. Can't beat that. I'm anxious to get this thing in some wood.

Wow! Good compression #'s!

So.... i know i kind hijacked the thread but...

Maybe this will help...

I'm not speaking for Brad, but all of the "math books" will tell you that the math only gets you in the ballpark (especially with 2-strokes that aren't attached to motorcycles). With any porting work the only way to get to the optimum is to cut and try, so a lot of experience will trump the math every time.

My mom bakes excellent bread, but can't tell me the recipe because she doesn't have one. I would need a recipe to make bread, and it would probably be recognizable as bread, but it'll never be as good as my mom's.

That makes sense...

I guess i am trying to ask brad what calculations/fluid mapping he does, versus intuative port widening

what i can do vs. what i can't

Here's a summary of what was done to this saw besides the conversion. The following parts were all replaced. There are a few odds and ends left to tie up, but it's ready to run tomorrow.

  1. &C.
  2. Crank seals.
  3. Cleaned carb.
  4. Intake elbow.
  5. Fuel line.
  6. Impulse hose.
  7. Model plates and decals.
  8. Air filter.
  9. Elastostart.
  10. Spikes and chain catcher.
  11. Loop handle.

I started with this yesterday afternoon:)

Factory port opened significantly. Muffler, heatshield, and gasket all port matched to the ported cylinder.

my 044 is 175 cold, i havent checked it hot yet. i think you said you milled the cylinder. im just am running mine gasketless with the factory cylinder.

i also have the 044 cylinder you guys watched me port. i just bucked 2 cord with the bone stock 044 its not muffler modded or ported and holy cow the thing just rips through wood like no other.

im very impressed with it. im tickled pink.

im very found of modding the muffle through the factory port. lots of potential without adding exstra ports. ill probly get around to moddng my 044 soon.

thanks for shareing your 440 big block project with us

Evan

Evan

I have done nothing to the crown of the piston or the base of the cylinder. I'm running a .010" gasket to get a squish of .017". I could not run this saw gasketless.
