Is this mod worth doing on my new MS460? I'm assuming I'll have to richen up the mixture a bit to compensate? Looking for some advice from guys here that have done it.

Thanks in advice!

Stihl has a factory dual-port muffler cover available for your 460. I believe the part no. is 1128 140 0801 (this number is for the 044/440 - but I think it's the same for the 046/460). I've read nothing but good reports on guys that have put one on.

Do it!

The current 440/460 muffler has a tiny little outlet hole. Open that one up a bit AND put the DP cover on, and you'll be back to the way they used to come from the factory.

You will have to adjust the limiter caps, but you'll get a happier, cooler-running, and more powerful saw for your trouble.

I installed the dual-port cover before I even put the saw into the wood, so I'm of no opinion. I did NOT open up the original hole, and I didn't have to piddle with the limiter caps. Yet. I'm still stuck at 4 tanks through the thing, so it's not even broken in yet.

The dual port muffler cover should be considered standard equipment on these saws. There's absolutely no reason to not have one, other than you can't afford the $30 for it.

Open the port even more by a bit, bolt it on, readjust your carb and use the saw like it was meant to be used.

And it's actually 1128 140 0801. ;)

Thanks Jeff, I have it written down correctly (I plan on getting one for my 044), I just didn't get it transferred from my brain to my fingers properly :dizzy: :) . I'll go back and edit my post.

Hey no problem Kevin. I just put that there because alot of dealer have trouble finding the dual port cover even when they have the right P/N. Like I've said on here before, I've bought several covers here and sent them to guys who's dealers couldn't/wouldn't get them one.

Thanks for all the advice. Just ordered one!
I'm assuming this mod will make the saw run leaner and I'll need to richen it up a bit?

Jim

Correct. What I do is just do it all at once. I'll expand the existing port on the back half, as well as the port on the cover. Not so much as to get crazy, but enough so I'm confident it's breathing better. I think Roger Barnett called for 30% larger. He's a good source, but I don't think I took mine that far.

And yes, you'll need to richen your carb.
