Fuel economy doesn't mean anything to me but I got lucky and found a way to increase it. I believe Treemonkey gets great fuel milage from strong saws.

Me and Mike Lee were at a gtg and everyone there ran my 066 and cut a pile of wood with it and never fueled it.

Fuel economy starts to matter if you're packing gas a long distance, such as for trail clearing and wildland firefighting. Otherwise, it's largely marketing talk.

It sounds like the bugs have been worked out of the 661. That might be my next saw with a full wrap.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the 661 isn't a good saw, but it's not a great saw yet!...Look at the evolution of the 066/660 they had their problems as well, but by the second and third version they had improved . ..And why were the later 660's such a slug in stock form?.....Thank the EPA for that!

Thats not what rogue60 found with his 661 ?!?
Clutch drum is the same on both saws 660/661. the difference is in the clutch carrier and springs and clutch shoes on the 661..
661 clutch shoes being much lighter and putting 660 clutch shoes and springs in my 661 fixed the instant bogging and slipping clutch in very hard Aussie hardwood..
Now to make a 661 the saw it should have been from the factory IMHO is do the above with the clutch also drill out the captive bar nuts, get two press fit collars made up for the cover and run regular bar nuts..Smooth sharp edges on the trigger your trigger finger will thank you if you don't wear gloves trust me on that one, and last of all is a personal thing run old school adjustable carb you either like the Mtronic on the 661 or you don't I'm in the latter, fom the get go was many times I be like man wish I could tune this thing..

I'm surprised the guys that port and run the crap out of 066/660's don't run 661 clutch shoes and springs for faster spool up there is a big difference in clutch shoe weights, also the heavier springs in the 661 make the clutch shoes engage at much higher rpm that's where the 661 gets it's snappy throttle response feel from..

Fuel economy I'm not the least bit concerned about dollar wise, but to me personally, if I have to stop less often to fuel up, I appreciate that side of it. At my age standing back up and restarting after a refuel is an effort!!

The 661 in its mtronic glory was eating over 12l of fuel in a day. Same days work with the 390 used half that.
