Alright, the Meteor piston is ordered from our new dealer here and now I am looking for a gasket set. Whats the word on that? Is there any sets to stay away from? Do I just order a kit from any online dealers? Do I need to hit my local Stihl dealer? Whats the word guys?

ditch the base gasket and use a sealer ,it will bump the compresion 15-20 psi

Thanks for all the info guys! When I tore it down I noticed the heat shield was missing between the muffler and cylinder. Is that possibly what caused the scoring on just the edges of the exhaust side?

Brian, don't U need to check squish if U do that? Also, if U don't have CR, does it make it "fun" to start?
170-175 psi with base gasket deleted normally ,i have saws with 220-225 ,they start easy ,i have never had an oem 1128 saw piston slap the head ditching the gasket ,does not hurt to squish test though ,i would not go below 17 ,it should be in the .021-.023 range ditching the gasket though on a 044

You ever pull a 288?
I had one and if it sat for a month or so it was the hardest saw I've ever had to start. I have Dolmar that treeslingr ported. The guy I bought it from took the CR out and replaced it with a plug. I got tired of replacing the starter rope so I took plug out and reinstalled a CR. It's not so bad now. Why would anybody delete the CR?

a 288 or 2100 is way way harder to pull then an 044. my uncle has an 044 that he dared me to try start a good few years ago while we were having a few beers. i remember it clear as day cause my dad and a few of his friends were there and we were all husky guys except for my uncle. we just got back from cutting a load of wood and i was talking up my 288. uncle didn't like that LOL. started it no problem. told him any candy ass can start an 044 without a decomp and handed him a 288. ****'n guy goes to drop start it and doesn't even get a full revolution out of it. cut his leg just from the cutters touching him (was summer time wearing shorts). i just stopped him at that. even i don't dare start a cold 288 without the bar tip supported on a log. recipe for disaster right there. was funny cause he looked like he was scared not knowing what to expect.
