Been looking at this ash tree for long enough...it's been dead for a couple years now. Also a nice smaller ash coming up from the base and with no bark yet so it's safe from the ash borer. So decided yesterday was the day, she fell right where it was supposed to. Good addition to my woodpile for next year...wood very good shape yet with no rotting. That's my good old closed port 55 that I got from Neal a couple years ago and my 009L.

It's sad to see all the dead ash trees in the background. Unfortunately, EAB is here in eastern Massachusetts already.

Sad to see them trees go. The wife wanted to go up to the folks place and look for mushrooms this weekend. She said that they grow around the Elm trees. I laughed and told her that we heated with the last of them about 20 - 25 years ago.. It won't be long and we won't have an ash tree standing in the woods.

We have lost our elm trees a couple times from the dutch elm disease. Now the ash borer has pretty well killed off our ash variety, only good news is the smaller ones that dont have bark are left standing so a good crop of ash already in place. My fear tho is when they develop bark the borers will be back to destroy, hope I'm wrong. I do know the very cold winters we have had last 2 years supposedly has killed off much of the ash borer population....

Not sure how you did that! I've been clearing dead ash on 29 acres for six years and every branch on every tree for the past 5 years shatters when the tree touches down.

Our ash trees are in various stages of dying. This particular one still had some leaves 2 summers ago. Many are in the condition you describe that have been dead longer. To be honest this is the first tree I've cut down in a few years. I have been using trees that have already been lying on the ground or hung up on other trees. I removed this one to let the new growth ash have some free space. I should take a few pictures of my woods to show how many I have leaning or down back there....horrible
