that would increase the price quite a bit. plus you cant expect a guy to work for free. i'm not saying he got took, but im not used to factoring in paying for someone elses labor. If the owner was happy and its still running good i would say he and the mechanic both came out settin pretty.

The quality would concern me to, however i would check in town at bumper to bumper to see what they could get a rebuild kit for. i usually have good luck with their parts. i doubt it would be any higher. these motors are everywhere.
He is happy with this engine so far its ran for 2 years or so so far.The mecanic gave him a fair deal i thought really. No problems yet.

little more digging has came up with an entire rebuild kit for 725. also on ebay there is a new head for 865. its bare. if you absoutly cannot find a used one. let us know if you get it
.

. Wow .. Ya I will ..... At this point we have worked out a deal . he is having a mechanic pull the head off it and look it over , see if it is good enough to rebuild the engine and give him a quote ... I have found 453 engines on e bay motors for 2 - 5 K plus shipping ....The motor has to AND I MEAN HAS TO be dependable when I get it up here ...... It would be nice if I could do my loggin without having to become a mechanic but I don,t know that is going to happen ..........
.
. I know I need to do some brake work on the skidder and some winch work ....

The skidder , Skagit # 1 ,,,, has a double drum winch so if I need to I can rig a tree and high lead with it , or shotgun or receeding line log with it ... factory built loader with log forks and top clamp . rear dozer blade ... Double fairlead arch ... And it comes with a 2 yard gravel bucket ............

motors, from what i can tell, on ebay are way to high. plus 9 times out of 10 they are located on the wrong side of the country. for example, a 12 valve cummins on ebay will go for anywhere between 4-6k used ~150k miles. i bought an entire school bus, is great running condition with a 12 valve cummis with 155k miles for $565 dollars. it even came with 100 gallons of diesel fuel back when it was $4 bucks a gallon. Keep your eye peeled for a good deal, sometimes they fall into your lap.

be prepared to work on this machine to keep it running. an old skidder being used for its intendend purpose will break down. weather it be hydraulic seals or, in my latest case, hoses. i bet ive put 3 or 4 hoses on it in the past coupla months.

what needs to be done with any skidder is once ya break one hose replace them all remember working on a machine isnt making ya any money. It dosnt pay to be a tight wad ever.

Tramp,
It would be nice, but I've learned that if you're going to own equipment you will have to become a mechanic, or make enough money to hire one.

... I have found a skidder in Southeast that needs some work but is still very good for an older line skidder .... It has forks with a top clamp , a 2 yrd general purpose / gravel bucket, a double drum winch and a big back blade . The rubber is in 80% . It has a couple of leaking cylinders on the buckettilt but is a very strong machine ....But it has a blown 453 in it ....If I can get a motor for a good price , I can get it for sweat equity ....I,m not in a time crunch so am looking and learning ... Being a bushler I,ve been pretty removed from anything that burns diesel that I had to pay for and fix for a long time .. So I,m nervously poking around.......... Shipping things is almost as expensive as buying them ... Plus , I havn't been south since 82 ... May need to go down to get something like an engine ect...........

sounds like a monster! pics required!

Will a 471 bolt into where a 453 was ?

,Or a 353 . I found a good 471 for 3K .and a good friend has a 353 I can get for way cheap ......a 353 would give me as much power as I ( need). But I don,t know what all would be needed to make the other parts fit . ?? Any Ideas ..Heres a pic for those who didn,t see it on the Loggin side .. It needs a good sand blasting and a coat of Skagit yellow paint with a hard lacqure sealer ... It looks rusty because it is on the coast and the salt air does that ...
