Looking to get into a loader tractor to jockey logs around the sawmill, maybe skid some logs out of the woods, and pull a box blade. I am not into the compact/subcompact/superduper compact tractors. Looking for an older one without any plastic on it, preferrably john deere, diesel, with a trans reverser, that I can move easily with my pickup. There is a john deere 2440 for sale down the road, decent enough condition, just about satisfies what I'm looking for. It has been sitting out there by the road with a for sale sign for many months. The guy is asking $14,500. My friend told me that that's about 3x what it's worth. I'm looking to spend more about 5-7k. I offered the guy 5k based on what my friend told me it's worth, and he sorta laughed at that. It has a lot of junk welds on it, and some cobbed up things about it. It would be the perfect unit.

I want to know, how overpriced is it?

Also, my old boss has a 656 IH gas job, with a bucket and forks, trans recently gone through said he'll sell it to me for 7k. My friend told me that's way too much. How do yawl think of that?

having a hard time finding FEL tractors, is there some good place to look? been looking all over CL cant seem to find much.

Anyways lemme know thanks

Those prices aren't too bad in my area. 2440 is probaby a $10k tractor with a loader.

I looked and found a 5305 deere without loader here was $15k. It's close to the same HP as the 2440. The 2440 is one of the older bigger tractors and not a compact correct?

Correct. I went and looked at that 2440 again this morn. What a nightmare that thing has been the victim of many cob-jobbers. It needs more work/money than I'm willing to put into a loader. Perfect size for me, but that one ain't it. He'll be lucky if he gets $6k for it. I don't know what that guy is thinking, everyone around here wants so much money for their used junk, it's crazy.

tractors with fel- pricing factors worse than used pickups. If its Green and says JD on it it is likely overpriced by 50% or more . Massey Ferguson and IH are decent units with out the hype. Parts availability on par with JD not that any oem part is reasonably priced. 4x4 capability will double the price. Just remember that front axle is not all that heavy on a tractor as they are made for pulling not lifting and shoving. Skid steers used are another overpriced area as they are general run wide open and put away wet. Repairs on those are really pricy .
If ya want front lifting power in a tractor find the biggest wide front end unit 2 wheel drive you can afford. Better choice is a industrial style front end loader - made to do that kind of work.

Thanks for the advice. Turns out I got to it too late, I put a down payment on a JD 2640 from a local farmer, looks to be in good shape. They just painted it all nice like, so she sho does look purdy. Has the 146 loader on it. 6000 hours. Price was better than any price I could find them going for on tractorhouse by alot.

plus he threw in a set of chains and a brandy spankin new bucket. It didn't have a cutting edge on it though, anyone know where I can get a cutting edge for it? Thanks
