I responded in another thread that the problem with the outrigger pad turned out to be a manufacturer defect. The problem should have been recalled; instead, the manufacturer is sending me retrofit parts at no cost to solve the problem.

The renter of the machine felt that, because I did not ask for compensation for the two hours late that he returned the machine, that we were even for his time looking for the pad. He had no problem with it.

I have rented equipment that was not properly maintained and lost valuable work time because of it. The rental store, upon my complaint, did not charge me for the lost hours but, it's still no excuse for sending out equipment with dull teeth or broken parts. In my case, I had no idea that the manufacturer of my lift was having problems with the outrigger pads falling off. As I said, they should have issued a recall - then, I would have known and gotten it fixed.

I was actually told the last time I rented a walk-behind stump grinder that as long as there is carbide on the teeth they don't ever need to be sharpened. :monkey:

Before I bought my sc252 grinder, I rented one for a year (and intended to continue renting); however, I got sick of taking twice as long to grind a stump due to dull teeth on the machine. It got to the point where I told the rental store that, if I came in to pick up the machine and it had dull teeth on it, they could keep it - they wouldn't get anymore business from me. That next season, I owned my own sc252 and switched over to a tooth system that was easier to keep sharp teeth on (greenteeth).

Not only did that rental store lose my business but they also probably got their machine beat to death by continually running dull teeth on it. Their excuse to me was that too many homeowners try to grind through concrete, rock, metal etc and will only destroy any new teeth that they put on there so, why bother?

Yeah, that would be one of the caveats of renting. You're also going to have to have a hard line of your terms. I have rented my Harley Rake to a friend for 2/3 of the price the rental place was giving him, and I didn't make him pay right away, because we're buddies, and things got forgotten, as far as who owed who. This was mainly because I didn't want to needle him about the money, and then when he ran it into a culvert and bent part of it I told him to get it fixed since he did it, but he never had time to get that part done. I had to get it fixed myself and give him the bill. He did pay it, but has not asked to rent the rake since. I guess he figured out I was not happy about the equipment damage.
It always seems to me like the rental companies are being real difficult when I read their rental agreements, but I suppose they are just covering themselves since not all renters have the same integrity in taking care of equipment and righting wrongs.

It seems the stump grinder always had dull teeth on it when I want to rent it. I bought my own set and swap them before I start the job. I grind with it then swap them back. It's worth the investment. They only cost about $1.50 a piece to have them sharpened. One place I rented a stump grinder told me to be carefull the lights on the trailer don't work. Never rented there again.
