I am in no hurry to pick up a chainsaw right now, but I know a lot of you all on here have a better eye than me for telling what the better deals are on some of the bigger used saws that are on ebay. I was just wanting to see if everyone on here that knows a lot of info on the ms460 and 660 could keep an eye out for me if they see any good deals on a good used one. I am looking for one to run an alaskan mill with. I am really leaning more towards a 460 unless I run across a good deal on a 660. I have spent all my extra money on the new 361 LOL. I am just really leary on buying a used saw off of ebay. Keep me in mind if you run across any good deals :)

If you're going to put the time and money into a mill and a milling saw, skip the 046. It'd do it. Heck, a Rancher will do it, but if you're going to do it, do it right. Get the 066.

If you're shopping ebay, forget getting a good deal. Used to, yes. Nowadays, no. If you try to take a shortcut and get a beat up saw because it's a good deal, you're likely going to get burned. There's deals to be had, but these days you've got to be leery of them.

My best advice if you're going to shop ebay is take your time, save a "Sthil (066 660 046 460)" search. Be sure to use the () so you don't get every Stihl item under the sun, while you do get anything with Stihl and 066 or 660, or 046, or 460. Check that search every day, and see what pops up. Good saws will be apparent. They'll look decent or even good, promise to run, be sold as something someone bought for a storm clean up or something like that, and have plenty of good pics. If it looks like crap, it likely is. If it's made out to be some built up hot saw, or the guy is BS'ing, skip it.

Good luck.

If it were me I would wait for Bailey's to get in their supply of 066BB kits (Jan) and buy a fixer-upper saw. Put a little money into it and rip away.

Try getting ahold of tkemble, member here.

I bought my first 066 from him for $250, and milled with it without putting a cent into it. I dorve down to his house to pick it up and noticed the tank was cracked and leaking. Spent a couple hours there seeing the saw I was buying totally dismantled and another tank put on. And he still only charged me $250. Not saying he will sell you a running 066/660 for $250...but he is a stand up guy, and Id gladly buy from him again.

I did buy an OE P&C for $225 on Ebay, couple seals, and some hoses and sold it to computeruser.

I just rebuilt and modded a 044 for a guy - he swaped me a really good 066 with a fried top end. It is the fifth project of the winter. So now I have my 3 worksaws (all within 3 months new) and a handful of others I have completly re-done and modded. I am waiting on the 066 BB kits - I can't seem to pry myself away from even the project saws at this point.
Saws are worse than my Cophenagen addiction.

For a milling saw there are more models available in the same and higher cc range, for less money too. An 075, 076, 084, are a few that would also do nicely, can run 3/8 chain and find parts for . The purchase $ will be less also. Other mfg.'s have good saws for milling but Stihl seems to be most popular in the milling area.

The deal of a lifetime comes around the corner about every two weeks. After you buy that deal, they come around almost daily.:)

051 or 056

deezulsmoke, you may also consider an 051 or 056. They're older and heavier, but have plenty of power for milling. I mill with an 051 & 30" bar. I agree with fishhuntcutwood that you have to be pretty wary of the ebay "deals". Really look at the feedback of the seller. I rarely buy something of any value from someone that doesn't have greater than 98% positive feedback. That said, you should be able to pick up a decent 051 for ~$250 +/- $50 or so. It's big brother the 076 seems to go for $100 more than the 051 all other things being equal. And the 056 can be found in that price range as well, but the Mag II's go for more. Anyway, just some thoughts.

That was a nice looking saw. I'm all sawed up or I would have bought it.

Is this 066 one you can put a big bore kit on when Baileys comes out with them ?? Just checking, I didn't know if there was a difference in the 066 and newer 660. This looks like a really nice saw, much better than the ones I see on ebay for the most part.

If anyone want's an 051 for milling I have one just sitting on my bench... I tore it all down a year ago, made it nice, and then just never get around to using it... Even have a couple of real nice bars.
