Hello, I have been lurking for a while and got a lot of good info, but now need help. I needed a bigger saw for the times that the 029 got bogged down. I picked up a 288 that looked like it need some TLC but I am having problems figuring it out so I can get the correct manuals. The S/N is 1340 482, which I believe makes it a 91, but there is no decomp valve. After taking off the covers I found out that the recoil is stamped 85, the clutch cover is 93 and the top cover is 91. The top cover also appears to be the wrong one since it doesnt fit quite right and its marked 503 59 17 which I cant find in any of the 288 IPL's I checked. It also has the large rectangular filter that is first shown in the 93 IPL. It is a beast and I can only get it running by drop starting, could someone please tell me if the elastostart listed on Baileys site is the right size rope for the 288, I'm going to need it:) I've already found a replacement brake but if anyone has a 288 parts saw I'm looking for a kill switch, throttle lever and lock, and a chain catcher. Any help with my Frankenstein much appreciated.

thanks

thats a big old saw - i just gave up my 181 se which is an 83 model very simular to the 288 infact the only replacement parts i could get were listed under the 288 saw ..... i'm a fairly big guy and i think i only got mine started twice without drop starting - you'll get used to it -plus it looks manly throwing the saw towards the dirt - lol

on another note - if it's excessive - it could be the carb flooding out the cylinder and cuasing higher compression - but what you are describing isn't far from normal - this is why i bought a new saw with decomp valve -
