What do you do for ribs that were popped out of place? Got back from the dock and he put 3 ribs in front back where there supposed to be on the sturnem(sp). And 2 in the back where there supposed to be along the spine. Damn I've been through some stuff but this ranks right up there with the best of'um.

Other than the fantastic narcotics that they give you, what else can be done? The worst so far has been a sneezing fit. Anyone have any ideas what to do to be able to breathe deeper and be able to even just move a bit easier?

If you have been through something like this, you will know how appreciated any advise/ideas will be.

Thanks

Sorry fella, never been through it. With all due respect, my guess is 2dogs, he seems to know how to deal.

But, your spelling is top notch...esp. considering the dope!

sternum, if i remember correctly.

all i can say is take is take it slowly, work through the sneezes.

never broke or displaced any ribs, just some severe bruising from football.

sternum is correct.

i would suggest a chiropractor. i had to go see one recently for low back pain, sneezes and coughs had me in tears. they will get you going on a 'chiropractic is a way of life' rant. if you can afford it its great. ive got my pain stopped for now so im not going back. doc wont be happy but he will be less happy when the check bounces.

AAhhhh ribs are bad....cant get comfortable no matter what you do. I think the only thing worse is when i broke my collarbone, that was evil....

Broke a couple as a kid Ice racing. It sucked.

Then in 94' I rolled a Jeep several times and broke 'em again, plus a couple new ones. It sucks worse when you're older...like everything else.

There is no way to deal with 'em, other than to just deal with 'em.

Siting up is better than laying down for a bit, then it sucks.
Laying down sucks so ya gotta sit up to sleep, and stuff pillows here and there all the dadgum time.

Wraps help, the warmer the better, but they drive ya nuts after 20min.

Good meds. a shot of Evan williams now and then, and an adjustable chair with several pillows of varied thickness, and LOTS of cussing for a couple weeks, then it's an occaisional PITA when ya forget..

Watch the pain meds. They will stop ya up bad after a while, which ain't a bad thing for the first couple days, cuz it hurts like a bastard to take a dump anyhow.

Slip on shoes. Forget the socks. Bending over to do anything is BOOLCHIT!

Sorry to hear ya got cracked up.
Hang in there and heal quick!

Stay safe!

The only thing that I can help with is the sneezing. If you feel a fit coming on, massage or lightly pinch the bridge of your nose right between your eyes.

You don't want to pinch real hard, just lightly massage between your thumb and finger, right up close to your eyes.

It will stop the urge to sneeze if you catch it in time.

I'm with Dingeryote. Done it twice myself. Once skiing and once stuck between the cage of a bobcat and the seat on the backhoe attachment. ( Don't ask, - not proud of that one at all.)

All I can say is take advantage of the chance to practice your swearing vocabulary and don't let anyone into your room who can make you laugh!

Then start scratching the two weeks into your bedpost - It will remind you not to do it again!!!

Yes I have been through broken ribs, no I don't have any advice just sympathy because they stink.

personaly i wrap mine up as tight as i can stand, but when i broke mine up high like that it was hard to wrap them. i have broke mine several times over the years and time is all that seems to help

STAY THE HE11 AWAY FROM THIS FORUM!!! It will make you laugh and your ribs will be poppin right back out. You can also try soaking your tongue in alcohol.

I though this was going to be about coooking ribs.

All I can say is I feel for you man. I've had 6 ribs broke so I know what you're going through. I couldn't stand the wrap. Done a lot of sitting bolt upright and shallow breathing. Drugs to sleep.

Sorry, dude! I am with 2dogs on this one...

I thought that you were gonna ask for a sauce for the BBQ ribs at the GTG.

I know a lot about treating back injuries, but not ribs. Cannot help yah there.

I broke three ribs several years ago, really sucked but now I have scar tissue that built up and likes to shift around and puts pressure on my lungs and heart. Doc says as long as I can still breath and keep my heart beating not much to do for it. First time it happened I thought I was having a heart attack. That really sucked.

I broke my ribs once snowmobiling and the other in a motorcycle crash, there is nothing you can do for broken ribs it just sucks at least you have some pain meds to help with the pain. Make sure you have a pilloe near for when you have to strain you can push it against the sore area to help with the flexing other than that nothing for ya:) Good luck and heal fast

Don't go swimming. Don't go on bumpy roads. Don't wrassle a horse into a trailer. If they aren't any better in a couple of months, break or tear another body part and your ribs will feel normal again. I speak from experiences.

The important thing is getting good sleep. And being patient, which I am not.

Just get used to the idea they are going to hurt and nothing much you can do about it!

They don't recommend bandaging because this can lead to pneumonia (restricts breathing). I wore a velcro girdle like thing around my ribs when I was doing stuff during the day, but would take it off at night. I just couldn't do anything without holding the ribs still so they wouldn't move.

Narcotics are addictive and you can't drive or do much of anything while on these. And they leave you with a "hangover" in the morning. I found it best to take them before bed so I could get some sleep. These will also cause constipation. If on them constantly, don't take any in the morning until you do your bathroom business.

As to the pain... What does air smell like? Well we smell air all the time, so don't notice the smell! Same with pain. If it is there all the time, it gets to where you don't notice it as much after several months.

The most fun is broken ribs and a nasty cold! Cough OUCH! Cough OUCH! On and on...

I did the same thing to mine in my teenage years and it hurt like hell.

Now it has arthritis in it and once in a while I lift and it hurts like hell for a few days. First time it reoccurred I was about 25 and I swore I was having a heart attack. Pain on the left side of my chest, couldn't take a breath as my lungs would swell and push on the rib. No fun.

The only cure is rest. Pain meds will help but when the pain subsides you can get overconfident and reinjure them easily. Lay low and listen to your doctor.

Dont know about "popped" ribs, but do know about broken ribs,no theres not much you can do.No laughing,no caughing,no sneezing, when you sit up slowly, may try exhaling very slowly at the same time, relaxing your diaghram as you come up.Concentrate on relaxing your muscles"visualize "them.I know it sounds wierd, but if it hurts enough, youll catch on.The wrap helps, but keeps falling down is what I remember.
I always found sick amuzement from the grinding feeling of bone on bone while "relaxed" and laying down.
Broke one on the left skiing, one on the right in a nasty bar fight with 2 bouncers in Dutch harbor(middle of the season, had to keep fishing for another 2 months),and the other one on the right....well cant really remember
