Looking or a relatively high quality unit, say in the $200 range. Figure 3-4 ton would do the job. For use in tree work obviously. Any suggestions? Don'tmind spending some money to get a lifetime quality unit. Thanks!

That's what I use. Super stought but sometimes almost toooo heavy.
Baileys sells them. I bought mine at Spartan Tool.

refresh it maybe. I miss posted the link and later re-edited the post.

Nope. I can't see it either. Wanna try again?

Tirfor is my favorite. Have not priced them lately (mine is 10 years old) but I doubt you can get one for less than 8 or $900 new. Nice thing about them is they pull as long a cable as you want to buy. Ratchet pullers that wind cable up on a drum pull probably 10 to maybe 40 feet.

Another good option might be to buy a portable winch that will run on 12 vlt, or one of the powered pullers like Baileys "Capstan Rope Winch" that runs off your chain saw ($600 pg 98 Bailey's 2009 catalog).

I quit using the short length ratchet pullers because there is often a lot of flexibility in a spar and a lot of slack in the lines. Z-rigging helps, but many times 10 or 20 feet of pull barely gets the slack out.

Might consider other options , like a chainhoist that doesn't lose mechanical advantage, and also a longer time until you have to reverse for another pull (instead of each arm length). Power is power, just a different, compact way to produce it!

come-along

just my opinion,i have a rope puller that uses any lenth 3 strand rope, there is some stretch w/rope but i love mine for pulling trees over,i also have a simpson capstan rope winch that takes any length rope mounted on a chainsaw but that does require more than 1 person to operate properly.hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. For tree work, will a 1.5 ton unit suffice of should I go for two or even three tons? I just want to buy one and be done with it, not looking to have a collection (now chainsaws on the other hand, that's a different story!)

Tirfor Griphoists are the king of come-alongs. A bit tricky to service but they will last forever. Ebay is the cheapest place to buy them, but usually Ebay just has the winch. The wire rope is a special 4x22 construction, not the more typical (and cheaper) 6x19 class. Tirfor doesn't recommend using non-4x22 wire, and if I'm putting max tension on the line, I won't risk failure with a substitute. Go to www.trailservices.com for a catalog on winches, wire, and rigging examples.

I use the rope cum a longs, have 4 of them, 2-per crew.....I`ll tell ya what you hook 2 up to pull what ever over (of course you need more than a 1 man operation) and no problem!

if its that big a "snatch block" with a 5/8 rope to the truck & its coming down! ive had 3 blocks hooked up & run 3/4 (thanks to the utility when I worked there) & with that set up you`ll pull the gates off hell.......
