Unless the gray one is REALLY dirty, they're different materials, one appears to be the flocked mesh, the other, appears to be a felt.

They are both clean. I believe oldsaw-addict is correct about the filters. I think the flocked one is on the left. I don't know if there is any difference in the flow rates.

The one on the left is the flocked filter, the one on the right, is the felt. I've seen that the felt gives better filtration of fine dust particles, and such, the flocked filter, doesnt do quite as well, but is still pretty danged good.

Thanks guys.

I remember EHP mentioning a filter for the 026/260 which flowed better. Does anyone know if one of those pictured is the one?

I tore (cut) the felt off mine and recovered both sides with superfine screen from a reuseable coffee filter basket. I would not run it except for special occasions ;) as it wouldnt be as thorough. Just keeps the birds from being sucked in. I did open the hole in the throat to match the enlarged bore of the carb, thanx EHP. Will have another look at removing some of that parking stop as shown here to let the flap further out of the air stream.

Good info on this thread, thanks Russ. I just brought home an 026 that some idiot decided not to fix and abandoned at the shop for the teardown fee (25 bucks) It needed a bar, chain and rim sprocket.

In addition to thinning the flap I took some of the plastic off of the flanges that the mounting nuts go through, this thing is really opened up now.

And Ben if you are running the same filter it had on it here, I opened up inside some more ,
if you guys need a filter just get the winter filter for the 260/026 it is nylon and lets alot more air in than the flauk filter.
The filters on the 260 is very restrict of , more than most saws, if you donot believe me , just set you saw with a tack them take the filter off and see how many more rpm's you gain, most saws you do this to will gain some but the 260 runs like it is another saw.

Winter Filter

Hi Ed,

Its me Wood Dick 007.

Would have a part number for the winter filter on the 026? Does it fit all 026/ms260's?

Greg

I looked at the part #'s on the filters in the pictures. They are both the same #'s on the front and back pieces. Ending in 1602 & 1607. The part # that I saw in a earlier post from Ed ended in 1617 and will not fit my older saw with out changing the vent system.

the filter number I used was 11211201617, you still need to do work on it but it is alot better than the flauk style for letting air in, if that filter doesnot work on your style of saw see if you can get the nylon type for your saw,

Ed,

Does the filter you're talking about filter as well as the others?

Thanks.

Most likely not as good but then again it is a Stihl filter and it is the style you would get on a new 260 from the dealers here , so it cannot be to bad
