New 271 vs new 291 vs used 362

Ok I'll play the huckleberry.

It was stated that a 362 will make 3 cuts for every two that a 291 makes.

So -- in 15 seconds a 291 will make 2 cuts (7.5s average)
-- in 15 seconds a 362 will make 3 cuts (5s average)

If you make a a cut with a 291 in 7.5 seconds and then pick up the 362 and make the cut in 5 seconds then you have improved your cut time by 33%.

What am I missing?

My point is you won't get the same amount of work done in half the time with a 362. But you will get done 33% sooner.

Correct. If it was twice as fast you could say the 360 was 100% faster than the 290, or that the 290 is 50% slower than the 360.
It's confusing but that's math.....

If you are looking at a new 291 why not look at a 261c for a little bit more cash

I understand that you picked Stihl over the Husky, but if you ran a Husky 550 xp I bet you would change your mind. I have both the 362 and the 550 and with a 20" bar on them I would grab the 550 every time. I keep a 24" bar on the 362 just for the bigger stuff because the 362 gets to heavy in the small stuff even with the 20" bar. Unless all your wood is big stuff, might want to look for something lighter.

We've done side by side comparisons with a carb 362 vs. a 291 and a 290. For every 3 cuts in larger than 12" wood a MS362 makes a MS291 will make 2. That's a 50% increase. Now, it was closer to a 4 cuts to 2.5 on a 290. Of course, there will be variables, but in general that 362 is MUCH faster than a 291.

That's actually a 33% increase if the 291 makes 2 cuts to every 3 for the ms362. If it was a 50% increase he would make 4 cuts to every 2. Still significant but to be expected from a saw that costs almost twice as much, has 5 more ccs and is a pro saw vs clamshell home owner saw.
