FWIW the new stihl caps have grown on me and I actually like them now. I wish the dolmar 7900 I am going to buy had them.

I like them now, also. I just wish everyone else get used to them.
It IS harder to keep debris out of the oiler, as mentioned earlier.

Never have a problem with chips just use a toothbrush to clean around them before opening. now if Stihl only fixed the need to burp the 200T oil tank while filling

Gypo, I have to agree that 385 KD is one really nice saw.

I used a tooth brush to clean around the caps for a while, but I really don't like the chips in my teeth and the bar oil breath is the worst!

Dudes the new caps suck I don't care what anyone says the problem being mainly with the oil cap.About one out of every ten times or sometimes even less its possible to not get it locked properly. Not to mention the o-ring is mounted so low on the cap it traps crud which enters the oil tank when you undo it.I've got the oil stains on my chaps and boots to prove this.Listen Stihl this isn't Nascar make a change to this ????ty complicated design! Thanks Dieseldog!

Went off in my pants once!

I knew thats not where the bar oil was supposed to be. There are index marks and if they are used no problem. I believe the design is basically good and gets away from the problem of how tight is tight enough, however I think Stihl engineers really missed the boat though by not making the index system foolproof. If it would only go one way and so obvious that the other way wouldnt even be attempted, there would be little complaint.

Just got thinking about these new caps the other day when I was fueling up a new 260 for my Dad.

I got thinking about Ben`s statement that one points up an the other points down and they both have alignment marks. Not on the 260s they don`t unless I`m really missing something. Both "point" up by my way of reckoning and I guess it is the oil cap has no index. I had stated fuel cap earlier.

Are the larger Stihls different in their orientation? Now I can`t wait to get home and break out the new 460 and check the caps.

It must be obvious that I`m bored.

I believe Ace is simply a hardware supplier just like Republic is a auto parts supplier. Most stores can switch suppliers when they desire. I really do not see where a store gets there product from impacting the quality of service the employees provide. I guess I am missing something but I believe the quality of service depends on the human who preforms the work and not the company the supplies the nails. Come to think of it the dealership I was at today used Ace as their supplier. I believe that used to use Coast to Coast and Servicestar before that. I would agree that I would not want a inexperienced person working on my saw but I would think any dealer moving 500 units would have a full time tech that had enough to keep them busy.

bill,
correctamundo. a dealership moving that many units could only beneifit by having a tech on staff. i really doubt stihl would appreciate just anyone shuffling through their warranty work either. in my neck of the woods that would be a lot of sales from a hardware store. marty

No, you're a genius.

Quite evident from your well thought out post.
