I got your message Graham - all I have to do is work out the bar mount for that McCulloch you have. No info available at all so if you can email me pictures of the mount I can help you out. And yes I'm too poor for a website (thanks Wayne!). I was selling a bit on eBay but pulled the pin due to tax reasons - it also created a monster and after working 10-12 hours a day I really didn't feel like coming home to another 4 hours of online work a night.
As far as parts go some guys here must have better Stihl and Husky dealers than I've ever been to. Whenever I've wanted Stihl or Husky parts they have ALWAYS had to be ordered in with a "we're doing an order in a few weeks so we'll tack it onto that", or "if we order $500 we get free freight so you'll have to wait" etc etc etc.
Quite frankly I rate very few Stihl or Husky dealers I've been to as times are tough and lowering stock levels in the current environment is the name of the game. They carry very few of the spares you'll generally need apart from bars and chains. Having a large inventory costs money.
If you can do maintenance saw work yourself you will find it a lot quicker and easier to jump online and order Makita parts through Edge & Engine in the US. If you did end up with a Makita and have trouble give me a yell as I have most common spares for that model of saw here as I run Dolmar 7900's myself. Also for your own info Graham I have needed to use VERY few of these spares apart from wear items such as clutch springs and chip guides.
As I wrote in my message I think your best bet would be a 7301 (or 7901) with the HD filter kit. I'd aim for the 79cc model as the trees in your photos are pretty sizeable and the longer the bar the better in case a log shifts while cutting. It gives you far more reach too. Despite the Stihl MS362 being a good saw it is overpriced for what it is and better options exist. Oh OK then, I used an MS362 once as have other people I know and we've all thought they're a piece of crap
They start, the chain goes around and around, some chips fly out etc etc but that's about where their limitations kick in.
Stihl chain is good chain, as is Carlton (but cheaper). I'm also very impressed with the Windsor chain I have in stock. I use it regularly but it's quite old now. Since Blount have bastardised Windsor after buying it a few years back I'm not sure modern day Windsor is as good as their older stuff.
Stihl RSC and Oregon LGX are both excellent full chisel chains and I actually like them out of the box in clean wood better than Carlton. Be wary though when people say Stihl is the best chain on earth when they never cut anything but softwoods and use RSC. Until they get into dirty Australian, dead hardwoods then their information is completely invalid.
i'm a stihl head too (look at me sig) but don't judge all huskys on one experience i got a 390xp a couple of months ago and it aint going any where it's a bloody good saw. cheers
Heh heh. I agree
