For what you're going to be doing, I'd look at a MS270 or a MS280.........if it had to be a Stihl. ;)

Round these parts the 310 comes from the dealer with .325 chain as if it makes a difference to anybody.

Chuck

Here, the 310 comes with 3/8ths. I wonder why there is no "standard" size on these saws? Distributors, dealers choice? General overall preference in the area? Can somebody help us out?

I too went thru the same kind of decision making last Fall. I have a small home in a very cold place and depend primarily on wood heat. Cut several cords of spruce and birch a year (the place is very well insulated). Have had an 025 for many years, got a new 280 (essentially an even up sale of a 20 year old 064 for the new 280) and really like it. I had considered a 361 but the benefit/ cost just didn't seem very compelling for my uses. The 280 hits the sweet spot for me.

Thanks for all the info guys. I checked out the 270 yesterday and there seems to be a big difference between the 250 and the 270. The 270 feels like a much more cable saw, its comes in at $100 more than the 250, by the sound of it its worth te extra money.

I think an MS250 will work fine for what your wanting to do. Will it last you many years doing the work you described? Yes. Is it a so called pro grade saw? No. If you follow AS for a while you will notice people usually recommend larger/higher grade/more expensive saws than what is needed imo. It all comes down to how much you are wanting to spend and what you are comfortable with.

Just don't fall in the "C" model pit - a bit heavier and more complex, for no good reason........:biggrinbounce2: ;)

OK, I'll ask it. Are you adamant about getting a Stihl? Please consider the Dolmar 5100 if your not. German-made, about same weight (if not lighter), 20% more power and probably less expensive.

.....not so on the couple of 250Cs that I have been into. I'd call the QCA "sluggish" and inaccurate at best, and it also discurages flipping of the bar.....:yoyo: :yoyo:

When I read that, I envisioned Obiwan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker on the Falcon, when Luke is learning to use a lightsaber, and Kenobi explains that a Light Saber is much more nimble and accurate than a clumbsy blaster...

Buy an ECHO, and May the Force be with you always....:hmm3grin2orange:
