Will the new epa emission regulations affect the life of new chainsaws? i want to buy a new ms 261 but am worried that the lean carbs will cause the saw to wear out before the 30 year mark my dads 028 super is currently at?

I don't think any new saws are going to last as long as a saw 30 years old with equal maintenance, just my opinion.

5 years! that better be shananigans, i'm not about to put $600 in to a saw that's only gonna last 5 years. it's a Stihl, i'm pretty sure your full of it. i would be better off to just buy a cheap saw every year.

Maybe if you never use. My saws have made a cool few 100k in the past 5 years thats a good trade off if you ask me.

5 year chainsaw lifespan is reasonable. Maybe even generous.
I wear out a pair of workboots a year. Doesn't seem to matter whether they are expensive ones or not.
Depreciating assets are one of the costs of being in business. My truck is getting decrepit, and it was born in 2003.

You are full of it,,, the average life span of a MS200T is 18 months in hardcore production work. Maybe you don't know that.

eliminate the spark arrest, run 91 octane and mix it rich, 30:1 or so
i get about 3 years out of an echo before its so tired i buy a new one
i got a husky 350 thats about 10 years old, its going to be retired soon
i got a buddy with my old 460, that saw is almost 10 and sees a lot of use, if anything it runs better then the day i bought it

I thin 3-5 years is standard for daily pro use, but your still looking at plastic components and bad gas, so life of the equipment is going to be less. Of corse if you keep up with your mess and empty fuel/ run dry, clean regularly and don't drop them they will do better, of if you just cut a few times a year you will expect a long life.

i gotta disagree, i try to never run my saws out of gas, thats the worst thing for them, its all fumes and no mix oil, use non oxygenated gas if you tend to leave them set for extended periods and top it off before storage

How often do you plan to use the saw? If it is going to be a firewood saw that will cut between 5 and 10 cords a year there is no reason that it won't last 30 years with proper care.

Like anything else there are ways around the law. There are no emission inspections on OPE once they leave the factory. The limiter caps on the mixture screws can be removed/modified so that you can properly adjust the mixture.

The life expectancy that the pros have stated are the truth for everyday use by a pro. Pro loggers consider the $2000 for a new saw every year a normal part of making a living. If they don't have a dependable saw they don't work. Their old saw will still run and will be usable as a back up or someone else will buy it to have a big saw in their collection. It just won't be dependable enough for a pro to stake his income on it.
