New member - question about 15 year old Sango Kaku tree

Hello, I live in NJ and we have a 15 year old Sango Kaku tree in our garden.
Near the end of spring the leaves started turning yellow/brown, and lately quite a few leaves have begun falling. The tree is behaving like it’s late fall.
Any ideas what might be cause this?

Make sure it's watered properly and consistently. Also, make sure the base around the trunk of the tree isn't buried under years of accumulated mulch and dirt.
