First, I never said without any oversight.

Second, the basic concept I'm addressing is the ratio of people who produce to people who live off of that production.

Third, the people to enforce the rules come first, then you add more rules, then you add more people, then you add more rules. The so called need for the rules is for lobbying for more money, very few times has it ever been based on a true need.

I was used to working with big cities to get permits to get jobs done. I would submit detailed plans covering all the requirements, wait three weeks and pick up the plans and permits with a list of additional requirements. I then took a job a little farther out than I normally do. I had plans and a contract with the owner. I walked into city hall and said I needed a permit. The lady at the front counter picked up her phone and made a call. Another lady came out and asked to see the plans so I unrolled them right on the front counter. She looked them over, asked a couple of questions, stamped her approval on the plans, signed them and said "You're good to go."

I was shocked, I paid the $35.00 fee, bought the $65.00 city business license and walked out ready to start a job three weeks before our planned start date. Just twenty minutes away in the neighboring city that would have cost me $350 plan review fee, $80 runoff assessment, $175 annual business license, $190 permit fee, and $65 inspection fee.

I consider the $100 and fifteen minute visit to city hall to be reasonable, the second city is totally unreasonable. They had roughly the same population, but the more expensive city had a building department that was housed in it's own separate $15 million dollar building with a staff ten times the size.

yes sir, same way around here. what i can't understand is that it is all state law, the different counties all interpret the law differently. to me its all black and white plain english. some times i would gladly pay a thousand dollars if they would just go ahead and review the plan.
