Great work! Thanks for sharing. It's stunning how much chainsaws developed over the 20 years following those. Have to admire the guys who used them.

Saw developement.

Thanks for the replies. Funny to think of how must the saws have developed over the last say 50 years. That Mall 6 will be 61 years old this year. Wonder if todays saws will last as long. The Mall has been restored to running conditon and repainted, so wil probably last longer than me. It already has since I just turned 59. Again Thanks for the replies and take care. Lewis.

Nice work, they look great. I like the 0MG .. it looks so modern for its time .. 80cc also!!! That's awesome ..

very nice job on them there old saws lewis, they dont make
them like that anymore,:D

Lewis, nice work on these. I'm in the final stages of a Mall GP. Your red looks pretty close, did you have it mixed? I found a bright red enamel that matched pretty well too. I was able to duplicate the "Mall" font by scanning a pristine owners manual. If you like, I can email the file.

I found it interesting how well these old saws were machined and made.

Hello Buzz. I sent you a PM. No I didn't have the paint mixed. Can't afford to get that fancy. I see a 2MG that was restored on Mike Acres site and it was close to the original paint I had on my Mall 1MG saw. So I found some Sunset Red paint and used it. My Mall 2MG looks like it has a darker paint on it, but figure that it has darkened over the years from grease, oil, gas and dirt. So when I get that saw running, I'll probably repaint her with the same paint. I do have some original NOS decals coming for the Mall 6, but willl copy them and make the decals I need for the saw and keep the originals in my files. I already have a copy, but it's slightly blurred and haven't been able to clean it up. I'm no computer expert on thses things. Talk to you later. Take care. Lewis.

Lewis, that thread was in a closed forum which will not allow new posts. I moved the thread into the hotsaws forum so you could post to it from now on.
I also took the liberty of copying your first 2 posts of this thread into the collection thread. I figured it would be easier for me to copy them over than for you to have to repost them.

Nice work on the resto's, as usual!!

edit: OK, Mr DDM created collectors corner in the hotsaws sub forum, so it is moved to there.

Greas removal.

Lewis, good to see you post here again!!!

I can't begin to imagine the painstaking cleanup work involved.

Do you use something like a dishwasher to get the main grime off???

To start with I use kerosene and brushes to clean the saw with plenty of compressed air to do an initial cleaning after breaking the saw down into it sub assemblies, that of cource after removing the magneto assembly so as to not get it wet or soaked with solvent. I then pressure wash everything I can. On the Mall 6 I reassembled everything after I got the parts I needed to get her running and made sure she would start. From there I disassembled the saw, sandpapered, scrapeed, steel wooled, wire brushes and used everything including dental pics to remove paint, etc. I then washed everything using Simple Green an plenty of hot water to do a final cleaning and dried everything. I did some more steel wooling, blew off any debre and primed her and repainted her. Took almost 2 weeks to just clean and repaint. Sure would be faster with a glass beed machine, maby someday. May be alot of hand work, but I enjoy the results. OK, talk later. Take care. Lewis.

Ok, found it. Haven't been around in awhile, see lots of extra froums and things going on. Will have to do some poking around, some reading and see about posting more restored saw pictures there. Thanks. Lewis.

I love to see older saws like that restored. Kinda gives me hope that I can get into that kind of hobby. I have always loved rebuilding engines since I was old enough to drive, but lately I have been spending a lot of quality time tinkering with 2 stroke engines. I have just acquired (for free) 3 project saws to clean up for friends and make run. Anyway, this post aint about that. Nice work, some of us really appreciate what it takes to restore saws like that.
