Blsnelling & Madhatte: I see you both are recommending a DP 460 muffler, stating it is well worth it. Is this a custom made muffler for “catalog” type product ? Aslo, exactly what does the muffler do ? rev higher, rev quicker, more torque ?? What generally is the typical response when the new muffler is installed and can I assume
that more air will be pumping through the muffler that a carb adjustment is an absolute must. This muffler change intrigues me as I am happy with the current MS460 output, just not delighted.

This has been discussed countless times, and with a little searching you'll find all the info about the 7900 VS 460 you'll ever need.

With that said here's what I think about the two saws.

The 7900 is much stronger than a stock 460, in big or small wood. If it's not faster/stronger you're not running the proper setup for a 7900, the 7900 likes running an 8 pin up to 24" B&C.

The problem some Stihl guys have with the 7900 is the fact it's so smooth, and it has such a wide power band, it doesn't feel like it's cutting fast. Perception is a powerful thing. After years of running and comparing the 7900 and 460, I will say the 7900 is closer to the 660 in power than the 460. I've never heard of any long term durability issues with the 7900, and I find them easier to work on than most Stihl's IMHO.

With that said the 460 is a fine, durable, strong running saw. However IMHO Dolmar is making saws just as good as Stihl at a lower price point.

Have a good one Andre.

are 046 stihls any faster than ms 460s ?

I don't own any Stihls but when I was searching for a saw in that bracket it came down to 3. The Stihl 460, Husky 372, and Dolmar 7900. I went with the Dolmar because 1) It was different, 2) It was a LOT cheaper, 3) It had a good reputation.
You will have no problem with a 7900 once the HD filter kit is fitted - it is a must in my opinion so also factor that into the cost of the saw.
I'm sure if I'd have bought a Stihl 460 or Husky 372 I'd be pretty happy but the Dolmar is every bit as good as any of them. In hindsight I'm glad I bought the Dolmar. My two 7900's have had a pretty good workout with no major complaints. One blew a base gasket after 3 months but this is a very rare occurrence by all accounts. I also have a 5100-S which is a great little saw.
Weekender or pro they'll do a good job as far as I'm concerned.
Good service is also important however where I am service is basically non existant. I bought my 3120 locally from a Husky dealer and although an excellent guy all parts have to be ordered as their main source of income is Yamaha motorbikes, Yamaha outboard motors, and boats.

i am not a fan of the factory dp muffler. Imho, they're over priced. A muffler mod is a must though. The factory port isn't much more than the size of a pencil! You can go a long ways by simply enlarging the factory port. If you want more than that, put another port on the other side and use a husky deflector.

Sugihara bars are reduced weight bars that can be found on ebay. They are not near as much of a weight savings as the oregon reduced weight bars.

The one thing I would consider, noticing that you already have a 460 and several other stihls is bar compatibility.

With all other things being equal, I'd probably choose the dolmar, but considering the interchangeability of parts & tools between stihls, in your case I might lean towards the 460.
