Hi Everyone, new to site so ill introduce myself! My name is Craig Thompson and im into just about everything outdoors! Hunting, fishing, camping ect. Another hobby i have is to find things that are broken for cheap and bringing them back to life! Which is what brings me here today! My latest find is a craftsman 5.2 30" bar that found at yard sale! it is was not running, so after a quick check for compression i offered the guy $20 and guy said no and i started to walk away and he said $20 is too much give ne $10 and its yours! so the rest as they say is history! so long story short is upon further inspection it just seemed like a carb issue so picked up a kit and rebuilt it! I have a buddy who works in a local saw shop and he normally tells me needle settings and fuel needle measurments so he makes things pretty easy for me! but at the moment he is fishing off baja california so i was on my own anyway i decided to try it with out the specs and heres what happened! Saw fired right up but instantly started to rev pretty high but not like wide open but pretty high! i think the pump setting is to high and dumping to much fuel to it! any ideas if not? and if so, do you know where i can get the settings for my carb its a borg warner S176A017 if that helps! thx in advance for any help!

The carb on those saws is a HS176a, it's a governed carb with a high speed check valve. The kit is a rk-23hs kit and needle should be flush with the meter basin. You should use all the parts that come in the kit including needle and lever. I have a 176 a carb right now that giving me fits

thx everyone for the reply's and thx kensie I need to go look at the kit number i was given because the valve you are talking about was not in my kit or was removed by the shop where i purchased it! but my hunch now is the wrong kit because there was two whelch plugs that didnt go any where on the carb! thx again for the info! I have never owned this saw but i have quite a few hours running one! the one i was cutting with was a beast! and the throaty sound they make is awesome i think! nothing like that sound and the smell of oak chips flying early in the morning! PRICELESS! thx again and i will post what i find out along with some pics!

There is some around here that may know the tillotson part number for that high speed check valve. I cant remember off the top of my head but it's a little round wafer check that inserts into the carb through the high speed circuit on the metering basin of the carburetor. They were kind of notorious for sticking over time causing funky run conditions. One of which being a lean run, im not 100% sure but this carburetors high speed is affected by the low speed setting some, I'm still troubleshooting the one I have and I think I have it narrowed down to the low speed circuit is not 100%.

A saw winding up high without you hitting the throttle is either a jammed throttle linkage or, more likely, an air leak. You said you had the carb off and rebuilt it. Double-check your work and gaskets used. Did you disturb the reed gaskets? Could be crank seals. I'd replace those on a saw like this without hesitation.

Too much fuel would choke it out. Too much air is causing what you are seeing.

You can override the check valve if you want by removing the check valve plug and inserting a small piece of pie plate or similar. Or get a carb from a 4900 which doesnt' use a check valve.

That deletes the high speed governor, the check valve is between the meter basin an venturi and the high speed needle threads into it. It takes the place of the other little Welch plug that comes in the kit for the earlier carbs.

It just looks like a brass plug when your looking into the basin and you can see a little brass ring in the venturi when you look in form the choke side. Below is an example from a 395 carb, it's the part that ends in 77 98-01

Hi guys, thx for all your help! I am posting pics of carb and what I thought was the valve kenzie was referring to and it dosen't look like the part diagram he posted! Maybe its somthing altogether different! This valve is about the size of a pencil and screws into side of carb body underneath the choke shaft! Someone asked
If I disturbed the reeds the answer is yes I took a look at them dont think I damaged the gasket but it is possible so will have to look at that as a possible as well as the cranky seals I know from two stroke motorcycles that 9 times out of ten if it was sucking air it would be the cranky seals!20190408_200600.jpg

That is the high speed governor valve from the side of the carb, it is different than what I call the high speed check/main nozzle check valve.

I will pull mine off tomorrow and take pictures for you, mine has similar issues, a racing condition at idle, it also leans out when at WOT.

And that valve you have pictured is the valve redunshee was explaining how to block off.

19 is the high speed check valve/main nozzle check valve and 26 is the high speed governor valve you have pictured.

I see is it acceptable to block it off safely? I was tuning on it this morning and turned in the low speed a 1/8 at a time and after about a half turn total she started responding and revs started coming down almost to wear I thought that was it but then another 1/8 and It wouldn't run at all! So must be a combo of things happening!
