Hello all,, new to site, i have been going the the threads and now im not sure what i want to get started with, what are your guys opinions on the best chainsaw mill to get started with for reasonable money? I have an 056 w a 32'' bar and have some nice big oak, hickory and some cherry. I need to get some good chains also. Thanks guys

Cody02, welcome to the forum! I started out with a chain saw mill & still use one to break down logs that are too big for my band mill. Go through the sticky post at the top of this forum for everything you need to know. The 056 should be a good saw for the job. A few suggestions, though. Get a ripping chain, make sure your oiler is working well, and start out with small logs, soft logs until you get a feel for the mill. Pretty soon, you'll be coming up will all kinds of ideas and modifications-- just remember to post them here so we can learn from them, too. Let me be the first to give you some rep!

Thanks Dave, ok i will check them out,,, is there anywhere in particular where you buy your ripping chains? Tanks again and look forward to all the good stuff on this site!

A ripping chain is not essential to mill with. If you already have chains I would just use these till you need to get new ones. By the time you finish messing with these you will want a longer bar and chains anyway!

Good point, BobL. Also there is another active thread on this forum that discusses places to get chains. Click HERE for the link. Check in on it from time to time. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys, i am looking at buying the Alaskan mill on Northerns site, the one for $199.... And yes axlr8, i do still need an air cleaner cover for my Stihl,,

PM me. I will dig out one, and get it headed your way if youd like!
