I guess this is the appropriate place for an intro? I'm just getting into chainsaws and tree cutting. My goal is to cut and store enough firewood to burn all winter. I'm going to try and significantly reduce my winter utility bill and get some good outdoor exercise in the process. I have access to enough trees this year for about 3 cord of firewood. Just picked up an old Husqvarna 51 that runs good, but I need a bigger saw for felling. More on that in the chainsaw forum...

Welcome. I hang out in the firewood and milling forums. Hope to see you there. One word of advice. Grow a thick skin. Any question you have, ask it. If it turns out to be a dumb question you'll hear about it. Even if it is a dumb question, mixed in with the ribbing, you will get honest answers. I'm a 4th generation Arborist, retired. Messing with standing dead trees can be dangerous. Be careful. The only advice I can give you is "LOOK UP A LOT". As soon as a dead tree starts to move forward, dead limbs will break off and fall backward, right where you are standing. Others will tell you about all the PPE you need, I'll tell you that if a hundred pound limb falls from 70 or 80 feet and hits you on your shiny yellow helmet, your shiny yellow helmet will get broke. On a on cherry note( I love Cherry wood), I heat my house with wood and my heat bill is 1/4 to a 1/3 of my neighbors with similar size houses, it does make a big difference. Google these things before you start posting so you have a general knowledge, Fiskars, Huskee 22 ton, Super Split. With the heating money you save you are going to have to buy all of those things, Joe.

Thanks Joe! I will heed the advice. Gonna use that final line as an opening argument with the wife.

Do you really think that line will change the outcome of an argument with the wife? Argument + wife = YOU LOSE, Final answer!
Maybe you can use some of the wood for a doghouse.

Yep! I've already been shutdown. For years she asked me to build a fire in the fireplace, but now she prefers to keep it clean & avoid the smell of smoke in the house.

Yep, my own personal doghouse. Actually, that's not a bad idea since I spend so much time in there anyway.

See how they are..... you don't want to deal with the fireplace....... so, of course she wants a fire.
You decide to use the fireplace.... and now she doesn't want the mess.
You folks need to go to the joke section and read about the bridge to Vancouver Island.

I have a 20 inch bar on my saw and beaver a 5 foot tree. If all you have is a 16 inch bar by beavering a tree you can drop any size tree
