I had two brush cutter Stihl 08s but used the motors to make chain saws.the brush cutters were to heavy.Jerry you can believe this or not but for about 10 years the Stihl 08s was the saw of choice for the pulp cutters in North western Ontario. It was not untl l the mid 70s that the Jonsereds and Husquvarna started to replace it I still saw lots of older cutters using them into the 80s If you were a cutter in the company camps you didnt have to limb much or buck on the landing so speed was not so critical but they loved the reliability and easy starting of the 08s. The design of the 08 make it a nice falling saw and it is great for limbing once you get used to the top handle design.I had my 162 Husky but always had an 08s on the skidder .
The cutters went from mostly Pioneers to Stihl then the Swedish saws took over there were not many Homies or Macs. IN 1981I went to visit my brother who was working at the Homestake gold mine in Deadwood SD I talked to cutters there and they were using Homies and Macs and had never heard of Jonsereds or Husky but had heard of Stihl.
You also have to remember most of the wood here was black swamp spruce and pretty well everyone was running 16 inch bars and sometimes 18 if the wood was bigger.
I work construction and there were a ton of 08s concrete saws very few now but many laborers tell me they wish they could still buy the 350 08s.
The air cleaner on the 08s chain saw is crude but with the proper mix ofoil they would last about 2000 hours .Most cutters prefered the 404 7 pin sprocket over the 8pin 3/8

These were sort of stihl first Kombi tool all kinds of attachments were available I passed up a drill and a 2 man auger a couple years ago that I’m kind of kicking my self for now both used this power head.
I am not sure who it was made by but one of the weirdest attachment I saw for a 08S was a earth anchor drill. It had a very slow speed gearbox that screwed earth anchors in the ground for guide wires on high line poles.

As for a bar I am almost certain I have a good condition Duromatic 21 inch. If not a 25 inch. If not and you want me to I can do some calling for you. It is funny sometimes what I have or can locate. You do realize the thousands of old Contra bars will work.

Old used stuff is not an easy find around here and both of the Stihl dealers(1 is a Oregon dealer)give you a clueless look if you ask for anything other then the home owner grade stuff that’s on the wall nether will make chains.
There’s a Stihl/echo/Oregon dealer in a small town about an hour from here that’s better he will make/repair chains but has hardly any stock of bars that don’t fit home owner saws and now that Oregon seems to be culling the duracut line and most odd ball bars not much available I asked about a k095 mount duracut (22 inch .063) that was available on the Oregon website the night before and he couldn’t get it I went back and looked and it was removed from the website. I’m glad my little John Deere 30(echo 302s) uses a A041 mount can pick those up at any hardware store it’s currently the only one in the stable that’s a grab in go.

The front handle was loose on this saw but that was easy to take care of. biggest problem I’m having is finding a longer bar being large mount Stihl finding a 21 or so inch bar is a pain at least for hard nose sprocket I can find but would need a .404 drum.
? CIA MIKE ? Listed some used but good Yesterday I THINK but not sure.
(EDIT) nope got my thoughts discombobulated Oops

I’m not afraid of modifying a bar I got 2 Stihl large mount bars coming but their way too big for this saw going to grind the bar groove out a bit(tail end too thick)and drill a different oiler hole and make an adapter to fit it on the pioneer super 620.

Well the dealer here might be able to get a 21 inch duramatic fingers crossed. The lady on the phone did not know what a guide bar is.
Still trying to figure out why the dealer doesn’t have much in the way of pro equipment. I’m guessing mainly bc this area was logged before chainsaws were even a thing.
Essex county(Ontario)was a swamp till settlers started coming down about 200 years or so ago their was about 5 or 6 sawmills here till maybe 90 years ago. In the last few years seems everyone and their grandmother has a bandsaw mill or chainsaw mill lots of slabs for sale lately.

Around here all but one mill has closed in the last 4 years. The one that is open got bought out but is going. I have a feeling they are having trouble getting enough logs though. My brother is a buyer for them and has one skidder. the mill has others. I am not sure how business has been. Now that it is warm it is time to go back to the dirt work so I am not sure how much logging he will get done. Of course they still have to buy logs. This past fall I saw an ad in the paper for a piece of ground for sale north of Illinois City which is about 5 miles from me. Well I could not figure out who's place that would be as it is near impossible to get too far north of there as you would be in the Mississippi river. I believe it was listed as about 120 acres with 100 of that as timber. I did not think much more about. Then just a few weeks later I saw the legals (land transfers) in the paper. There it was, it sold for just shy of 1 million dollars. Now that may not seem like a lot to some but here our decent, not excellent tillable ground is $8000 -$12000 an acre. For 20 acres of tillable and 100acres of timber that seemed like a ton. Well I was talking with my son when i got home in December and he told me where the place was. This was way down in the bottom near the river in a place called "trails end" because all trails end in there. As kids you were told that was where the ghosts lived. Well it turns out some export logging company up by the Wisconsin line bought the ground, not the logs they bought the land. They came in with feller bunchers and processors and stripped it. In this area it is generally way to rough for those and no one has them other than maybe Miller's out of Dubuque IA. In any event they paid a huge sum for it now they will try to sell it off to some folks looking for hunting ground. I have not seen it yet but they say the place is completely trashed. I need to run up there on the Mule and take a look before it starts growing up.

Well the weather was crappy today so I dig some looking around. I found a 21 inch and 25 inch Duromatic. I then called a local dealer and he is pretty knowledgeable but he could not find any listing for it. I got to thinking that I know about 5 years ago I noticed a difference in what Stihl USA had on their website based on what location you choose. I tried Placerville CA but still no luck. I know they are around but frustrating finding it. The dealer I talked with made a very valid point. He said even if he could order it there is no idea when it will show up. I know parts availability is a issue. I have not used the Stihl 500i availability issues but he said one of the big supply issues is the wiring harness is made in the Ukraine

They seem to be able to get a 21 inch but it’s a bit pricey.
Seems Stihl does not advertise the hard nose stuff and with Oregon pulling most of their duracut line I’m guessing there’s changes coming wondering if it’s the anti kickback thing maybe their cracking down harder.

If they cannot get you the bar let me know. I could probably let mine find a new home. It is pretty good just needs cleaning. If is a modern white/black letter bar not a vintage orange/silver one

There’s a Windsor bar on there too 21 inch guess he had a few of them but idk how I feel about that exactly.
A Windsor is a great bar, we used many of them here as a replacement once the original bars wore but all of them were sprocket tip. I never managed to wear a Windsor bar out, the material they were made from took a lot of wear n tear.

I have seen many bars destroyed by those not knowing when not enough oil was being used/ delivered to the bar and chain. I have worked the woods in teams where there was always a few that could break anvils with a rubber hammer. When I first got into the woods many saws were manual oiler only and most of those saws fared well but once the auto oiler saws came along it seemed the operators completely forgot about the benefits of oil actually getting to the chain. Even had guys bragging about how little oil their saw used per hour/day etc. Well duh! The bars n chain were charred black, oil delivery and chain channels total;ly packed with sawdust n oil gunk.

It came with 2 of the same bar one is in good shape .but I think I know why this saw has a steel plug where the oil cap should be it was a friends grandfathers saw and they gave it to me knowing I won’t get rid of it.
