Which would you recommend to be more reliable ie: less breakdowns, hot/cold start issues, ignition coils going bad sooner then later, carb issues etc...esp in hot/humid climates.... IE: the AK or Toyota Camry/Bluebird in reliability-you get the drift
MS720 or the 1201 by Echo ? All stock, just for comparison sake. I would believe the aftermarket parts and oem parts be more in quantity for the 070/MS720 series correct? Thanks for advice.

I've had 070/090 in the past and now own 1200 the predecessor of 1201 as my big saw, you're right 070 and 1201 are the toyota hilux of the chainsaw world. Pretty much bullet proof indestructible design, for me 1200/1201 gives the av advantage of which 070 doesn't have in my region.
I'd guess 1200/1201 are slightly more durable compared to 070, nothing really breaks down on this model. Unless you really lever the saw hard and abuse it, front handle rubber mount might tear. That's the most i can think of, air filter rubber seal degrading over time or placed incorrectly before tightening air cleaner cover. Starter pawl wearing out due to high compression from factory, that'll take awhile to happen. The Japs knew what to do and did a great job designing a jungle saw that will run for a long time before breaking down. The torque they deliver at such low rpm is mind boggling, they run very close to 090 in terms of power. Oiler on echo are just nuts, they over oil 42" bar in lowest setting. The manual oiler isnt needed at all, they probably designed this saw to pull 72" bar
070 isn't that bad either, intake block sometimes break due to no av and vibes. Other than that they're the land rover of chainsaw world, they snap flywheel side crank if governor are defeated. Parts are all over the place, AM are so cheap and accessible around the world. Slightly less power than 1200/1201 though
Medium size logging crews run 365/372xp,288xp,385xp or ms381/382
Big size wood loggers run 395xp, ms660
Millers run 070, 1201 with few bars welded together to get the length they need, 1201 pulls harder on big long bars in hardwood. My 1200 has 42" it pulls that setup effortlessly and probably don't even break sweat, mind you 404 hardnose is heavy load for 880/3120 models
I think these models were flagship in their respective range, the issues are not any different than back then. 288 has a following here for some reason, there's something special about that saw. It's a saw out of it's time, but somehow manage to keep up with the newer ones. I know a logger who swears by it, he said it'll never let you down. And his starts at every pull for him, the rest are just as good. Newer ones got cosier av's
Thks sir for the detailed replies, very informative. Long time ago learned (the hard way) having the newest/fastest/most advanced etc... isnt necessary the best option. The AK/Camry/Bluebird/Hilux/Land Cruiser approach I like better. Heat/humidity/mositure, dirty/sandy wood is a no-bueno for the hot rod M-Tronic crap, and that's probably reason why maybe not sold there? Either way, I like the KISS approach, less things to go wrong.
It appears that the Echo/kioritz people made a 070 (2.0 version) with their big saw-1201....the gas/oil caps appears 'newer style', and like you said more AV mounts, rubber or spring or both?..... Since you all have access to the real-deal 070 and 1201, I wonder if chinese 070 copies are prevelent over there? And if so, how do they hold up? And if parts supply is the same, and could only own one, which would you choose, the 070 or 1201 ? ...thanks

You're welcome, agreed i was doing that too. Then realised down the road, old school design will save me from hassle and trouble in the long run. They might be abit slower for today's standard but the pros outweighs their cons, 661 was tested here and didnt hold up well for our weather so they got held back. 572 was launched last year and folks arent thrilled, especially when you need to bring it to shop with computer diagnostics. Its ridiculous for jungle work, they are living few hundred miles in the woods away from any nearest shop.
Gas/oil caps on 1201 are still old school, better than 070 for me. 1201 are all rubber mounts with plastic inner bush, good solid mounts that you can lean on while maintaining good anti vibe.
Chinese 070 not favoured here, our hardwood will thrash incompetent saws quickly, regardless of parts availability 1201 is still my choice of big wood
Although i have never run an 070 i have run a 1201 on many occasions, I take my 1201 to all the gtg's i attend

UNCLE! how are you!? Hope everything is fine up there. At least im not alone on how 1201 feels in big wood, i did alot research and tests on this model and found some interesting stuffs. Im sold on this model, my favourite big saw. Even the mighty 084 is in 2nd place for me

Looks like the same bearing in a 166 on pto side. I would think the HS266 carb would be to small?
Yes it is the same type/size as 166 pto bearing, HS266 and HS266A share the same venturi size. Not too sure about jet size, but HS266A is governed i think.
Im also in amidst of few other research, 1200/1201 is supplied with this small carbs so they can harness the low end power to the max. Which explains the factory intake ram, I've only seen such design on this model and never elsewhere. So technically if you want to bring the power band way high up from stock, all you need to do is slap a big carb on it and it should spin more rpms with big jump in hp.
But its just an assumption, i also sent a used 1200 to fellow member here to be dynoed. The result shows it producing max torque at about 4k~5k range, probably the lowest max torque rpm among the big saws. 166 should be close i think, 1200 makes 6.7lbsft max torque. 090 makes 7lbsft
