245SA AF cover & AF on a 306A?

How have y'all been? I took a break from AS because I haven't been doing much with saws.

I recently got a "sleeper" 306A rebadged as a Western Auto Wizard 430 Automatic via eBay, that is missing the AF cover & AF.

My question is, can I use the AF & cover from my 245SA to at least test it until I can get the proper parts? I haven't had the chance to try it (maybe in a couple of days) but something tells me no, it won't work. I know that the 245 cover is taller, but I'm not sure about how the AF might/might not fit properly.

Thanks in advance!

Chris

Chris,

The air filter covers are not the same. In addition to the difference in height, they are also not at the same angle where they meet the tank cover. This shows you the difference better than my avatar picture. While the angle appears to show the 306 cover to be longer, both measure 5".

I might have to paint my 3700 now, that testors green looks awesome.
Joe, it is somewhat lighter than the poulan green. However it is a lot cheaper.
what the heck, it is snowing like crazy, March 30?? where is Spring

When I lived in Connecticut, it snowed on April 8th. The day my son was born. Got 8" of wet snow.

I drove in snow for better than 2 hours getting to the Central VA GTG last year. That was the first weekend in April. I was much farther south then Connecticut...

Yesterdays's excursion for that 3400 was a 3 hour ordeal covering all of 48 miles round trip. The snow wasn't supposed to start until later, but I ended up right in the teeth of that crap on the way there...in a 2 wheel drive F-150 7700 with lousy rear tires. Was definitely a white-knuckler all the way home, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat for another score like that one.

And yes! The saw actually does run! I swear ta hell it does!:chainsaw:

Thanks, Gary, that makes things much clearer.

Dare I mention that the "Wizard" 306A also needs a muffler cover, as well as the AF cover?

change both of the covers to 245A, while you are at it put new fuel line and filter on. as well as a new air filter.)

*EDIT*
He relisted it after it sold with no bidders. Not sure how much these things go for. It might would have gotten more attention with a different title and not lost in the other poulan pro stuff. Would make a nice addition to the collection if the price was right though...

I couldn't be any happier with how the Sears 3.3 turned out.....

That's really nice. What's the difference between yours and what I think may have been badged a Craftsman "Gold Edition"? (I'll hafta look at mine later to see if that's correct.)

Same saw, different decal? ('Course yours is waaayyyy cleaner than the one I have!)

Pogo is that the same one I seen on craigslist in Ohio for 75?

Listed at $150/OBO over in Brunswick. I really like the saw. Amazingly clean. What is typical compression for these? This one feels low. I haven't put the gauge on it yet, but it fails the drop test miserably. Still runs strong, tho.

Well, I'm definitely on the 125psi side of that range. Looks like that bottom ring may be carboned into the groove just a bit and may be costing me a few psi?
Maybe but not likely. If you're taking the effort to pull it apart you may as well put some new rings in. A base gasket delete may bump up your compression to a better number without having to get a new cylinder....
