I would have to say 3700 is harder to find, than a 4000. Unless you want to go with the Craftsman 3.7. Those seem to be out there in good numbers. I guess that is a result of being sold at Sears, where the 3700 Poulan was sold through dealers.

Again, I believe the color determines if it's a thin ring 3700 or thick ring 3800. I always forget which color denotes which, but I did have a red craftsman with the power sharp addition that was a thick ringed 3800.

Screws. The case with the three locating pins has a bracket which bolts to the cylinder. On that bracket is a threaded stud. The top cover on that version has a captive nut that screws down on that stud. Some had nuts that were round with a slot for a screwdriver to tighten down (I think).

I don't believe the top cover that was held down by the three bolts in the cover had the provision for the stud.

Thanks, yeah one of the 5200's has the posts and a top screw and the other needs the 3 screws but they are missing. Any idea if they are available anywhere?

For the Craftsman 3700, red is generally a 3700, grey, 3800.

On the other hand, Craigwell has a grey 3700 and you have a red 3800.

I'm gonna say yes. The top one looks like typical 3400 & 3700. The left one looks like typical 4000. The one in lower right looks like one that might be found on either 3700 or 4000. I personally have never seen one. But, have heard others speak of one that had "pins" on them.

They are 10-24's. Poulan PN 530015329

Get some 10-24 cap screws or if you have a 3400 try the screws from the top cap from one of those or in the mean time go to any hardware store and buy some 10-24's at the appropriate length.

Indeed they do Tim. Have a slot in the knurled top screw on the 4200 & 5200.

This is the top of the engine muffler bracket without the stud. (3 screw type cover)

Here is an early one with the stud. (single screw type)

Those screws were a Fillister head screw and it sure would be nice to find a place to get a supply of them reasonable. I wouldn't care if they were all 3" long and had to cut to fit as needed.

I have 2 2300's in a box. Toasted pistons and cylinders. But, lots of good parts there.

Are you sure the cylinders are toasted? I got a new piston or two for those.

That post went and reminded me I need to put that 3700 together that I just haven't got to yet.
Should be a good one, its NOS but missing some parts off it. I think I have all I need for it except a nice 3700 AF cover. I guess I could just use this extra 4000 top cover and filter on it for now..

I'll take a look next time I'm out in the shop. I might have a slotted 3700 cover, can't remember. I had put one on my Craftsman 3.7 one time. They didn't come with one I know.

LOL, Yes, I learned my lesson back the first time I ran your 71A, without hearing protection! Them saws sound great...when your not the one running them, up close and personal.

Are you sure the cylinders are toasted? I got a new piston or two for those.

One saw suffered white death and ate a load of carbon. The cylinder might be salvageable but the piston is done. The other has little compression, similar piston scoring through exhaust and I assume a similarly well worn cylinder. I couldn't even get the compression up enough with 20w50 to pop. Same PO, same internal neglect.

They are a few projects down the queue. It would be swell if I could make one good runner though.

I have had pretty good luck with our local Fastenal. They do like to sell full boxes in the store but I know you can order smaller quantities online.
