I would deffinetly twist thoes vents slightly and paint it. You can get grill paint that can take 1200deg. I did both of mine. They look brand new

Been nice these saw would have had a gear drive pump instead of the impulse pressure type system, but at least we can rebuild the check valve. Poulan would have discontinued the gear drive and would have been hard to repair.

Anyone got a complete clutch cover for a 306A? Someone in the past tightened the bar nuts down without seating the cover. Result - 4 cracks; foot is gone too though that mayve been a separate issue. Got lots of Poulan stuff to trade
Never did find a clutch cover so decided to fab a foot and just live with the cracks. Fabbed foot does double duty as a foot and chain catcher. Not pretty but redneck functional.

View attachment 528668 part of the modification I did on the 475 like. I opened up the indsides too but I kept it factory appearing as possible.

What's the deal with the aluminum cylinders and chrome piston on some Poulan saws? Wouldn't the rings wear out the cylinder quickly. I had a older craftsman saw that had an aluminum cylinder and a chrome piston. The compression was low but everything looked good so I re-ringed with caber rings and the compression was still low. I had a couple top handle Poulan with low compression but the piston looked good through the muffler and the cylinder was scored on the side opposite the carburetor. Are these aluminum cylinder/chromed piston not as durable as the conventional chromed cylinder arrangement?

Personally I think the chrome bore bare piston is a superior design. However I've seen some 3400 countervibes with a ton of hours on them. Why they tried chrome piston bare bore idk.

My dads bare bore 3300 was bought new around 1989 or so. It has been used alot on the land and when I went through it a few years ago the piston and cylinder still looked like new. Cutting some stuff it shouldnt be ask to do IMO.

That said I do prefer a plated bore if given a choice, but have no problems with bare bores.
