My 655 would run lean and idle poorly when I first got it. Didn't take me long to realize it didn't have the proper carby. A member here sent me a good rebuilder and the saw has been running excellent ever since.

I have the same problem the saw sounds like its starving for fuel and ill start chopping the throttle to keep it running. Was it the stock carb or aftermarket and if so what kind?

You're both right . The top pic is the exhaust side of the P&C. All of the chrome plating is gouged out of the bore and the piston is galled. The bottom pic is the opposite side of both P&C, with somewhat normal wear. You can see the heat it took by looking at the paint on the jug, below the exhaust port.
FWIW, I've seen more 306s with toasted top ends with the paint baked on the cylinder like that since I been looking for a top end. That's a tell tale sign of a crispy engine.
This saw did crank and run with fuel dribbled into the carb, but had a carb leak so I didn't fool with it much. It had 90-100psi.

What color is the rest of your 306? The paint on the top end looks like the older poulan green to me.

The carb originally on the saw was not stock, at least according to the IPL. It's been several years so I have no idea what carb it was.

I have the Poulan Pro and I am very satisfied with it. Especially with the cutting speed and power with the anti-vibration system. Clean slices... I got it for $160 since my old Craftsman has gone kaput...

You own 2 tree services and bought a $160 Poulan? Hmmm, is that BS I smell?

Notice, this is not a link farm although it resembles one sometimes.

i got a question about a rim for a poulan 295. but i was woundering if you can change the pitch by putting a rim on it without changeing the sprocket?because the sprocket and bar and chain on my poulan pro 295 is .325 pitch and i was wanting a 3/8 bar and chain without haveing to spend to much on a new sprocket, bar and chain.can it be done like that or do i have to go ahead and buy everything new

You can change the pitch with a new rim, but you will have to buy a new bar unless you are running a hardnose.
The 3/8ths chain won't ride on the .325 bar nose sprocket properly.

Old Faithfull lives again and the Poulan sound

Just got done with this one for a guy who used the heck out of this on for a long time.

It was pretty much wore out. It got pretty much everything done to it. Crank and rod brgs, a good used jug with new rings. Also oiler rebuild, new lines and a carb job with a governor plug off.

I think it runs great. The old faithfull Thirty-O-Six is back!

Sounds great Mark! It's been a while since I've heard old faithful buried in a log. I've cut ALOT of wood with that saw and now plan on cutting ALOT more!

BIG THANKS to Mark guys, he is the POULAN KING around here in my book with his knowledge and kindness to help people out!:bowdown::bowdown:

That chain was the first one I grabbed just to try it, a half dull semi chisel. It runs good and should be good for another 20 years.

Yea I could tell the chain was a little on the dull side. As for the 20 years, I'm dang sure gonna put it through the paces!:chainsaw:

If by chance you have a replaceable tipped bar, you could swap out the tip. Not that much more to change out the whole bar though.
