Well after reaasembling one of my 3400's(with a mild exhaust porting job), it iddles like a kitten. Tomorrow I plan to put a bar on it and see how it cuts. However this saw has a small leak in the flywheel side crank seal. Looses about 2 lbs over 1 minute. Leaking thru the inner rubber seal. I'm hoping that running it will eliminate the leak. What are the odds?. I assume if I monitor the spark plug color frequenlty I'll be okay? Any thoughts?
Bob

How many lbs are you testing it at? Two lbs over a minute would not concern me in the least. I hardly have ever seen a saw hold with no loss at all. Run it like you stole it.

:agree2::agree2::agree2:

2 Lbs. in a minute is no leak at all!!!!!

I'd bet you would be hard pressed to find many that good, coming from a lot of factories brand new.

Craftsman 2.1 ps

This was an ebay saw, only my second. generally im nervous about buying a saw sight un seen but the price was right and it looked lightly used. Took a chance and lucked out. Good comp, spark, p&c. Also did these saws come with rim sprockets? This one does and id bet its factory. This saw has the orig. barracuda chain and 14" bar. Also the power sharp system is complete and functioning, even has the stone left. The fuel line was junk as was the filter. The air filter disinegrated when i touched it. When I took the carb apart it looked like some one lok-tited all the screws, eventually the loktite broke down and gummed the carb. So new walbro carb kit, gaskets, line and filters and a good clenaning, here she is. Nice saw hardly used. We've said it before, ill say it again. These saws were great. How many new 38cc saws have a bridged exhaust port?

Nice saw find again Joe! I see that has the Power Sharp gizmo on it. Do those things work at all? Probably need special chain too I'd guess.
There was a nice 3700 Craftsman on the Bay awile ago that had the PS on it also. Never seen one myself.

Gregg,

Joe, most of those saws did not come with a rim and drum setup that I can remember.

That said it seems for some reason I have seen alot of those power sharp setups that do have the rim and drum setup. That includes other brands and chain pitch's.

I owned a Craftsman 3.7 equipped with PowerSharp, Oregon Barracuda chain and a spur sprocket. When I tried to buy a replacement chain, Sears told me that the Barracuda chain with PowerSharp was no longer available. Sears then sent me a retrofit kit with a replacement chain that included a clutch removal wrench and a new clutch drum with a rim sprocket. The retrofit kit replaced the OEM spur sprocket with a rim sprocket and disabled the PowerSharp feature.

I'm sure someone will provide info on these saws. Don't have either model but find it interesting that the 245 is larger than the 306. Would have figured it to be the exact opposite!

Believe the saws are pretty much identical except for the P&C, Jack. Your best bet might be to get hold of a good parts saw. Shoot me a PM with your needs and I'll check to see what I have. That numbering system for the models is a curiosity. I see the 3.6 c.i. in the 306 and I can see the 4.5 c.i. in the 245, but it's totally inconsistent. :dizzy: You might also consider posting what you need in the "Swap Meet" thread to see what others can offer up.

Right O Steve, the main difference like stated is the P/C. The early 306's had a lighter duty connecting rod then either the later 306 or 245. The other differences is the 245 used a taller tank cover, carb cover and the front handle is taller also.

Oh the decals were different also.

Thanks, Mark. I knew you'd be along sooner or later with the details. I didn't realize about the front handle. Need one of those myself. Maybe I should post on the "Swap Meet".

Let me see if I have one. I think I do but its not very good if I remember right. If so I can put it in the box coming to you later this week.
