I have a chart, it says 46mm for the 54 cc saws and 49mm for the 60cc saws. Not sure if the chart is correct but it sounds like it.

They all have a 32mm stroke if someone wants to do the math.

In case anyone wants to know, bore x bore x stroke x number of cylinders x .7854 will give you the size of the engine. It does not matter if metric or inch system, all units must be the same.

46 x 46 x 32 x .7854 = 53.181

49 x 49 x 32 x .7854 = 60.343

A 360 chrysler is a 4" bore and 3.58" stroke

4 x 4 x 3.58 x 8 x .7854 =359.901

I'm sure this has been cover a kagillion times, but I can't find it. Does anyone know the HP ratings of the 3400, 3700, 3800, and 4000? Just insanely curious. Thanks! Merry Christmas!!!!

I honestly have never seen a HP rating from Poulan on their saws. Maybe they did, but I havn't seen em. I suspect they are probably the same as a similar sized Sthil or Husky, minus 1 hp. I think they figure it out, then arbitraily just add one to the number, to impress themselves & the compition. :D

In short, I have no clue.

Gregg,

Happy holidays

Want to pass along my sincere wishes to all of you for a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year. I believe its important to remember things we tend to overlook, such as health. We sometimes get caught up in the trappings of life but forget that without our health it all means nothing. That situation came to light in my family but thankfully the prognosis is excellent. May God bless you all whether you are religious or not. It can't hurt to have a little extra help.

Like Bob said, merry Christmas to all you Poulan fans!

Made it out to Vacouver WA today, but I'll check back in from time to time.

My first Poulan, purchased on 12/24/2011 !!

With some great technical input from a AS member I ended up with a Poulan 4000. Overall condition looks to be low usage and pretty clean. I'll pull the muffler and look inside when I get some time. I will need a replacement plastic clutch cover sometime in the future but the broken one will suffice for now. Should be fun to get it up and running as it does appear to have set for quite some time. I'll get some mix together and see what happens for starters....after I take the muffler off and look inside.

Well neat, good for you. Your self santa scrounge skills are kicking in! And remember, pics or it didn't happen!

Poulan 3400 max rpm

What's the max WOT rpm on a 3400. I bought it off ebay and it was so pig rich I'm surprised it even started. Low side must have been out 4 turns. I set it at 1 turn and throttle response is pretty good now. High side I ran it in and it's turning a hair over 10,000 now. Sounds pretty good but I don't have any experience with these older saws.

Thanks!! I like your wording; "self santa scrounge skills are kicking in!" .....that exactly covers it!!

Oh.....and it did happen.....just happens to be a bit dusty and rusty as it has been sitting for who knows how long!???

Kind of odd how the air cleaner hold-down knob got eaten away....here's a close-up of the eaten away knob;

This would be good for a lucky fella with a 4000 that needs it!

Congratulations for finding a 4000!

Thanks, Mm, for the Congrats!! Also thanks for the link to a new cover, great to know about the availability!! I'll be wanting to check the 4000 out a bit more, pull the muff and see what's inside, put some mix in and see if she'll fire/run.......before I spend any more money on her.

Just so you know, since you posted your picture, the one I linked to is actually not the correct one for your saw as its a later one that used the one piece decal. It will fit and work fine though.

Its just me though,I wouldnt try to start that saw yet though without tearing it apart and checking it closer to make sure you dont damage it. If it sat that long you can just about bet it will need fuel lines, filter, tank vent and probably a carb kit as well.

Just things we do to revive the old beast's!

Better send it here, thats too much trouble to bring back to life, I mean that chain is trashed from being that rusty. That means the bar is shot, and since the bar is on the saw, well, you get the picture. Send it here and I'll give you something for it, and the shipping. Don't know what I'm going to do with one in that kind of shape, but you won't have to worry about it anymore.
I'd have to find one of them knobs...:D

Wow! XPLRN Thats a mighty fine looking 4000 hiding under all that dust! I don't think I ever seen one dusty like that. They are usually covered in a oily residue that would prevent the rusting. LOL Looks like it could be a real gem under there. Like Mark said, I think I would tear it down before I tried starting it. I can all most guarantee you it will need fuel lines & carb kit etc.

And like Jeff says, that saw is pretty much trash, especially with that less than perfect air cleaner knob. Be glad to hide that from public view in my shop for ya.:D

That sounds like your pretty close. I don't own a tach, Santa Claus over looked me again this year on the saw goodies.:msp_mad: The standard procedure on these, is one turn out from lightly seated on both the H & L screws as a starting point. From my experience with them, it won't take much fiddling from there.;)

Glad to help.

Actually I don't know beans about them.....I just parrot what Mark and Gregg tell me!!!:msp_confused:

Mike

Thanks. I thought it must be close to right. I'm enjoying playing with some of these older saws.
