Thanks Gregg.

Fuel filter, air filter, clutch bearing and maybe a rim are all in order for sure. I will get a rebuild kit for the catb as well.
I identified the saw with piston pics from this site. It has a 3700 clutch cover and a 3400 starter. I assume the starter was replaced some time ago due to breakage.
The saw is not pristine but appears to have low hours on it. The piston (Al) and chrome bore look great through the exhaust port.

PS got the duck bill. Thanks for the tip.

One of my favorite saws. With the muf. mod they run pretty close to a 4000.

Added 2 4000 style louvers and opened up the diffuser holes to 5/16"

Al,

I dropped the cylinder the old fashioned way (with a piece of stickyback sandpaper stuck to the desk top) on the 3400 that I piped and it brought the compression up to around 150.
I need to raise the exhaust on that saw and let it get a little more back-charge.
There is one in the works that I think will be pretty impressive.....(I hope).
Stay tuned to Arboristsite for further details!!!

Mike

Mike, The saw you speak of wouldn't be this one would it? or one just like it. If so, I'm very much looking forward to the results.

Poulan 8500s

Supposed to go look at 2 8500s on Thursday. I can get the pair for around $150-$200. Is there anything, other than the usual stuff, to check for on these?
It's good to be back out hunting these critters down again. My accident had me out of service for about 4 months.......

What is to check at that price???

Just wondering if there were any problem areas with these. Gonna try to get the two for $150, if I can. The guy's just had them in storage for a while. Plus, he says he has a box of parts, too. Don't know if they're 8500 parts or maybe some for a 5200 (that he had stolen a couple months ago......

The normal stuff I guess. Cylinders are near impossible to find. Bearings and seals are easy. You don't need two.....do you???

I had originally just asked him about one. But he said, "Sure you don't want both of them? They're kinda like a family.....been together for a long time" So I figured he wanted to get rid of both. Besides, two is better than one, right?

in this case two is only better than one if you can't talk one of us into taking the other off your hands. then again, you prolly don't even need one so you can give two of us the opportunity to own one.

Two 8500's for $150... I think I would buy them, sight unseen!:msp_biggrin: I'm gullible sometimes. I have spent more, for less, on other stupid things I didn't need.:D

Gregg,

That would be the one Gregg!!!
When is the next Poulan Lovers GTG??? :D

Mike

Good deal Mike:rock: Can't wait to see that one run. I'm hoping to try for another Poulan Lovers GTG in Oct. sometime.
That is unless a couple of the the big names in Poulan fame, say one from Indiana or Kentucky would want to host one..LOL
