I found a bottle to put on my saw that came off a snowmobile. Is it a good idea to put it on. What will I have to do extra ?

You might be getting a bit ahead of yourself. Is your saw tuned for nitro? Has it been ported and fitted with a custom combustion chamber that will generate the temperatures necessary to sustain the long burn period of nitro?

Are you talking about either form of nitro methane, nitro propane or something else? Real nitro methane has the igniteability of peanut butter and really does weird things to combustion. I do not think you will make more power with it unless you have optimized the saw for its use and in all likely hood will make less. That said high energy coils and radical heads dont really fit on a saw. BTW real nitro methane does not mix with gasoline.

nitrous?

It sounds like he has located a "bottle" of nitrous from a snow machine. with a snow sled you have the ability to plumb in a "wet" shot. You do not want to hook nitrous to a saw as a "dry" shot. the safe way to use nitrous is "wet" or when you come into wide open throttle it opens the nitrous solenoid along with a fuel solenoid to supply that extra safety shot of fuel. thus preventing over oxidation or an extra lean condition that those pistons just love until a hole developes in them. with a saw you don't have the location (without some fab work) for the extra fuel capacity or a clean location for an arming switch, two solenoids, and the wot switch. With some good fab work it will work, and look clean as well. We run nitrous on our unlimited hotsaw that is powered by a ford V6. The bottle is a small sneaky pete bottle that is mounted to the saws chassis. Looks clean. One of our competitors uses nitrous, but he has a ten pound bottle of nitrous that he carries on his back! What happens IF he falls backwards, and knocks the valve off the bottle? Ever heard of how serious nitrous fires are? again No Thank You! Bill Jr

NOS

If installed properly, with the proper mods, I can't foresee a problem, one of these saw junkies can guide you along better than I can. The only things I've shot have been car power , and I thrown a shot of propane on a navistar (powerstroke) diesel. I've never played with a two stroke single before. I will now stand aside for one of the "junkies" to take over. Bill Jr

Nitrous

Even if you could figure out how to physically mount the bottle and plumb the carb. You still need to deal with the fuel pump. A wet hit requires fuel to be injected under pressure through a fogger nozzle or a plate. This would require a fuel pump and battery. On top of that you need it to be constant. Any wet system needs X amount of fuel at X pressure with the button down. Anyway, theres my 6 cents worth.

Nitrous by itself is inert. It wont burn even if you hold a match to the end of the bottle and turn it on. It only allows the use of more fuel. Nitrous is no more than chemicaly enhanced air. It's 36% oxygen by volume. As opposed to air which is 20. Injecting it only allows the use of more fuel thus creating more power.

The bottle that i'm putting on is 25 horse power. Will it be an advantage or should i try to get my saw on alcohol with nitromethane.

nitrous

sawfixer- the points that I was trying to make with my statement is this. If someone is to install nitrous, do it the right way! don't just slap it on something without any concern aka redneck engineering. Cost effective is not the best way to add horsepower! The nitrous fire: I've seen drag cars burn due to a backfire in the engine and add the extra oxidizer (NOS) with the added fuel is disaster. All of us, at one point have looked at someone's race saw and shook our heads due to the way the saw was built/ modified. If you must go fast, make sure you have the pockets and or sponsorship to do it the right way. Bill Jr

How am i gonna get hurt ? Whats the difference in a sled or chainsaw ? Madsen's had a saw with the bottle.

nitrous

You have to look at the motor and add nitrous appropriately. A motor with 7hp can't be expected to hold up to a shot of juice that is over three times it's normal rating. The parts just won't hold up. Stuffing that much fuel and nitrous in that little combustion chamber would probably resuly in a backfire or an actual hydrolock. Either of which will send saw parts flying across a three state area. If you are intent on doing this (which I don't recommend) don't go over 3 hp. Nitrous oxide is not something to be messed with. Please be careful. I wasn't kidding about some research on the subject in general. Do some reading and you will soon find out how unrealistic what you are trying to do is. I by no means meant to offend you. I was just giving you the facts...just the facts!!

nitrous fire

Maggiesboy,

Point taken. I wasn't sharp shooting you I was just saying nitrous by itself doesn't do anything. Nitrous added to any kind of fuel or to an existing fire is potentially dangerous. I think we are in agreement on this subject.

Thanks for the consideration boyz. I didn't think it was so dangerous and i thought it was just a good way to get some more power where it was give to me. My mechanic (uncle) had it on his sled and he knows what he is doin when it comes to 2 strokes. I thought I would just ask some opinions on it and see if it would make my saw faster.

Another thing I want to know is if I do land the bottle and it works properly, will I be able to turn a bigger sprocket ? What size bar should I go with ?

Hydrolock? If the motor had that much fuel going into it it would not run. backfire? What in the world are you talking about?
What would happen is as soon as you hit the button the top of the motors piston would melt.

My mechanic (uncle) had it on his sled and he knows what he is doin when it comes to 2 strokes
If he did he would not put nitrous on a sled. Nox almost always results in massive engine failure unless the the carb is jetted pig rich or the sytem uses a fuel solenoid as mentioned above. Even then nitro sucks because now that your motor isnt going chernobyl, your sled is clutched wrong when on the gas.
