Its simple, if he did not call to let you know the situation, 'kik him to the curb'.
Calling the next day and explaining the colossal blunder why they did not show, or call in the morning before work, if I felt they were sincere, well maybe that would have been acceptable, and maybe Id give him another chance, probably would if they had been a good worker and learned well, but calling three days later, SEE YA.
It will only be repeated in time, Ive seen it again and again and again.
Guys who want to work but cannot make it for whatever reason, pick up the phone and man up, guys who don't really want to work, or have a drug problem, or what the hell ever, call three days later to try and suckhole their job back, the only reason they are calling is cause their wife, or girlfriend or Mother, or just the need for more money for you know what, is making them.
If I were the OP Id feel fine in the decision to can the guy, PO'd or not, guy got what he deserved, re hiring would only lead to more disappointment.

No. What I meant was that leaving the employees with the impression that bad behavior will be rewarded with instant termination can be a very good thing.

The only problem with rehiring the recently fired is that it is a dangerous tool: if used to often, firing becomes a toothless threat.

I don't consider firing someone bad behavior, unless it was done badly.

Strangely I understood the intent of this post b4 explanation. The beer must be working.

What if you had a big craner, and had a wire drop and the HO had pulled the vehicles way out of their estate, and they took their herd of shi tzus to the vet so they wouldn't be scared and had their boy stay home to watch and you had your mortgage payment needed to be paid by the job and.............

The guy no shows/no calls. ouch, it has happened to me and I went ahead and did the job anyway going up and cutting in the picker, coming down and chipping. He calls and does the "sorry I had diarrhea" routine not that day but the next night.

I have had so many losers do the day later or 2 or even a week later apology over my 40 years in the bus. that you know if you take them back what is gonna happen.

PS, I have found the worst ones are the "star of the Job" guys (like your guy). They cannot imagine anyone firing them for any reason as they are so good and important.

I know its kind of soft to take him back. I made sure he understood the point because he earned himself a week of no work. When he did call I told him I found a replacement for him and that I thought he quit or something. I wanted to make sure he understood that he was replaceable. And the guy that replaced him is on stand by cause he does want to work. And its not going to be easy for the no call no show guy when he comes back either. If he gets mad and quits, then the other guy is waiting on a phone call. So either way I win. I just dont want to waste the time I invested in training.

believe me I understand Monkeyman, might want to direct him to this thread or print it off and he gets some more insights hopefully. good luck.

definitely good you let him go. something more common than no call/no show is hungover/drunk/high. this is prolly the reason fo his no call/no show. especially if he cant even come up with a better excuse than 'i had a bad day' lol

That's funny, you do the same thing I use to do, when I first joined A.S.
I use to also just read the opening thread and only a few post.

yep. not gonna look through every post on a multi-paged thread. maybe if your words were more captivating...

Guy just called a few minutes ago. Said " uh I just had a bad day". After I thought on it all day today I told him I had to let him go when he called.

First, were you ever very clear with him about blowing you off prior to this day? For example I now tell guys, "look, if you ever blow me off when u know I have an important day scheduled and I am depending on YOU to show up, you better have a really relaly good excuse and a phone call, or I will let you go for at least a month or so!"

Then I use the three strike rule as someone else said.

Also, I like what "l2edneck" said about having a deep crew. Especially with the economy the way it is right now and so many unemployed people out there not working. Also with craigslist!!, and with how hard and frustrating this work can be sometimes.. In the spirit of the NBA playoffs, happening now! I have chosen to keep a much deeper crew, kinda like a strong NBA team who has some all-stars on the bench that dont need to play everyday! I tell the top dogs they can always play, if they are playing well, but if they ever get into a slump, or a better guy comes along, they may get some of their playing time. I tell the guys I can teach them something new everyday, and they can learn quickly if they really want to, so they should progress and show signs of improvement, and more importantly that... I'm not asking them to sign their lives away to tree work, but at least while they are here, while they are doing tree work, give it their all and try to progress and learn this industry, and learn to do it right, otherwise there is always a new guy right behind them who may be taking this more seriously who may take their job. Life is a competition out there, and I want them to take on more responsibility and make more money!

Anyway, thats my little schpiel...
And because it often can be like a revolving door of workers as you know sometimes guys! I have been there done that as well, and had hundreds of workers over the years. I'll fire them in a minute now. I tell them all that nobody's job is safe if they show up with a bad attitude or f around!
I dont take #### from guys anymore, and if they look like they are tempermental right away, I let them go. This job is not for my friends anymore, or the weak of heart.
However, I will add that u have to be able to identify the good ones who may need a second chance once in a while, if they have a good story as someone said, because we are all human, and everyone has different hardships in life. If my mind will let me forgive them, and I want them back for one reason or another, I will bring them back. If not, goodbye!

Watch I think it might be the third episode of AX MEN this season, I think it is... It was so refreshing to me to see how these guys, these bosses talk to their workers when things are not working like clock work. They yell and swear and holler, because thats how I am when dudes need to step it up! Its just part of the industry. These are not educated people you are dealing with. And if they cant take the pain, or the yelling, in the heat of action, then how are they going to act when there's really a problem, or when its really crunch time. Let them go.
Again, try a posting on craigslist. You will have a line of 30 or 40 guys who want to work, and you can pick and choose. Start them slowly. I give them all reading materials and articles every now and then. I draft them like an NBA team would draft their players. A certain physique. It takes a rare type of person to do this job and to do it well.

Go Celtics!

Peace guys!

Greenstar!
