I took some more pics of the tab/prong that the slide is supposed to contact to shut the saw down, and I tried to wipe off
some crud, and the contact bent easily, from me just trying to wipe it off.
So I am guessing that his is bent up and rubbing the flywheel and grounding out his ignition.

I removed the clip and reassembled just enough (skipping Chinese jigsaw puzzle throttle) to check spark. Good news--we got fire! Tomorrow I will reassemble with throttle but without clip, just enough fuel in tank to cut some small limbs. This will test my buddy's original failure symptom--saw would not keep running even after a pro rebuilt the carb. My guess is he had an intermittent Stop Switch root cause. Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement (and humor). HarleyT that last photo you sent was especially helpful, doing side-by-side compare I could see key differences. This clip is a very intricate design, and easily messed up (not a robust design).

And he disappeared? Dude at least let us know what’s going on. I think I have the same problem. I have 2 009L one orange and one white, they’re slightly different. He’s right the early model don’t have chain brake.
