I believe if you showed a picture of dirt to a chisel chain it would dull it!:ices_rofl:

Almost. They did a test at Stihl sometime ago and here's what they did to show the differance between chains. They took a 360 saw with 33RS-72 full chisel chain and ran it through a log and timed it. Then they took the saw and buried it right in the ground. Then they tried to cut with it and guess what, it wouldn't cut nothing. They took the same saw and put 33RM2-72 chain on it and timed a cut in the log, it was 1 second slower than the RS chain. They buried the saw in the ground and tried to cut with it again. Guess what, even though it was cutting slower it was still cutting where as the RS stopped completely. Just goes to show the fastest cut isn't always the longest lasting. Another factor people overlook with todays saws is chain speed. The faster it turns the faster it dulls. Saws of yester year dulled slower because the chain turned slower. Makes ya wonder about these high speed modded saws. Faster in the morning but by days end who cut the most wood, hmmmmmmmmmmm

I switched to a semi chisel for firewood cutting as well. I cut mostly dead dry oak. Semi chisel lasts a whole lot longer.

...well put, thall. my old (very) 65 husky is a favorite around here for cuttin' hedge (osage orange).

...semi-chisel & 7000 rpm keep it cuttin' when when the sparks are flyin' off the new saws...

..."cord, can ya finish buckin' this up for me???" yep, can & will.

heck, she deserves a full view...

I know exactly what your saying there. I had a young man come in the shop last week giving credit and complaint about his 046. He said you know I love the way my 046 runs and cuts but it sure does dull fast. He goes is that because it runs 14,000 and I said partly. He uses RS chain and like everyone else he says its great as long as you don't touch any dirt. So its no secret about how chains react to dirt and speed.

yeah, my dear young wife has a 346 i bought her for her birthday. (gotta love a chick that wants a saw for her birthday)

she doesn't hesitate to grab the old 27 pound saw when we're cuttin' hedge.

she, as well as the guys i cut with, just love the way it sounds....

as an afterthought, the fella that started the long-winded thread on torque's non-effect on power should spend an afternoon with this saw...

THEN, tell me...

Really? I never heard of that.

Yep - it's a pain in the butt... I has a chain polish up the sides like it has been chromed...

This Black Cottonwood is Populus balsamifera ssp trichocarpa; these are huge long-lived monsters that grow incredibly fast and move grit up the lower portion of the tree.

I never had any problem slicing up cottonwood in Montana... but they were runts in comparison.
