I've had my Husky 345 for a little over a year now and I'm getting a little tired of paying $6 for every chain I need sharpening. I picked up the Husky sharpening kit, with the 2 round files, flat file, fancy handle and little bracket. The instructions on the back suck, can anyone point me to a post, or web site with good chain sharpening instructions.
Essentially I used their little bracket to position the file but felt it was way too cumbersome, so I just did that part without it.
I just don't understand what I'm supposed to do with the flat file.

thanks for any help.

Hi Ian, have you done a search for sharpening info here? You should be able to find tons of info.

The instructions for the roller guide do leave something to be desired but if you take the time to figure out how to get it on the chain correctly it will help you immensely. Once you understand how it seats on the chain it should simply be a matter of picking it up and setting it down. The guide even has enough tilt capability to put a 10° downangle on chisel chain. This guide is nice because it offers an enhanced visual aid for the correct topplate angle and also keeps the file at the right height to give you the proper sideplate or hook angle. Are you sure that you have the proper kit for the .325 pitch chain the 345 uses?

As for the flat file and corresponding flat guide, select which end you want, Soft or Hard, place the center notch down on the tie straps and around the back of the tooth in front of the depth guage you want to file, let the depth guage to be filed come up through the opening in the guide and then file away until you no longer remove any material. You should only need to do this every three or four sharpenings. After you have lowered the depth guage round off the leadinng edge as necessary. These depth guage guides work exceptionally well in my opinion.

Keep practicing and don`t be afraid to ask questions.

ill add this. russ sent me some stuff to help me as i had become the worlds worst filer.
the best thing and really all i needed was a simple roller guide . its just sets on top of the chain and holds the angles an such, rite. all u gotta do then, is stroke with the angle of the original edgetrue..
. i have a stigmatism in my left eye thats getting worse. it causes all angles to look different than true.
u ought to see me try an build something with out usin levels an such. what id do would truely give u a laugh. but i digress.
any way husq has them, and probably others . its the one with nylon rollers on each side. works for me.
