is it normal for bar oil to weep out of chainsaws? my new stihl 211 does it, but i havent notices, the 029, 290, 390, or even the cheap northern tool saw doing it but they are all in cases with rags at the bottom. just wondering because if this is abnormal im going to take advantage of the extended warranty on the saw.

one of my saws (290) will leak once in a while (maybe 2-3 times a year)...usually when I leave it on something important...last time it was on some rough cut white oak lumber that was to be planed and used for stair treads in my house...oil leaked down soaking into 6 boards making them useless for stair treads:dumb2::dumb2::dumb2::dumb2:

I don't know why it leaks?, It don't really bother me any, I just try not to put it on anything important anymore after ^^^....

That's what the saw case is for...... I try to run it down before storing anyhow. Fill it up prior to use and off we go

it just seems odd that this is the only saw that does it, of course it is the newest saw so maybe the older saws caps leak so pressure cant be built up?

anyhow i''m going to talk to the dealer and see what they say worst they can say is cant or wont fix it. only has about 2 hours run time on it so it might just need to be broken in or the seals are dry and stiff from sitting on the shelf

my 455 rancher does this, and the pressure seems to be the biggest issue. I cut with the saw and once im finished I leave it on its side with the cap off and sitting in the hole while the saw cools. seems once its down on temp I can close the cap and it wont weep out anymore.

I had an old Jonsered 675 champ that would leak oil all of the time but the Stihl's I'm running now never seem to leave any noticeable drips.

My 440 started leaking a couple years ago, and like stated above it is only when I set it on something important. The 250 doesnt leak a drop

Note to all - when through cutting for the day pull your bar and chain- clean out your bar groove paying attention to the bars oil port. After a good day of cutting that port is going to be blocked with crud contributing to your problem.

I was complaining about that with my new saw some years back. Here's what 'SawTroll' told me to do.
Remove the clutch cover, bar and chain, and clean all the dirt and grime off the housing around the oiler port. Put the saw back together, and fill it up with oil. It won't leak.
That works, but, I don't do it all the time, and I end up with a puddle of oil beneath the saw.

Depends on how much it's leaking.

A small amount is normal, but when my old Rancher started leaking a lot, I took it to the shop and explained the problem. They treated me like an ignorant child who didn't know a thing about saws, telling me that it was normal and I shouldn't worry. I told them that the amount it leaked was NOT normal and I wanted them to fix it. When they finished, they admitted that there was something wrong and they fixed it properly.

its going in for repair under warranty, i work at a sthil dealer and its still getting sent to STIHL for repair, according to my manager they haven't offically issues a recall for the stihl ms 211 oil line but STIHL is fixing the issue for free if you take it to your dealer as it IS a known problem on the 211 series
