I take a job on for these "poor" folk, as a favor for my girlfriend. Even though they live on the wealthy side of town, I give them a great price. Im advancing up this half dead bush of a maple, pruning as I go up. I reach the highest tie in point and the ladys 14 yr old son comes out of the house to tell me his mom just called to cancel the whole job. He said someones going to do it for free and sorry for the inconvenience...maybe im not in the right thread because now that im done whining...I want to know what you would do? She left me a voice mail saying "O sorry, we can talk about you maybe plowing this winter!" Mind you this is a type of lady that had me bring my insurance papers so she could see them. Just pissed me off.

I would have told her that since you already started that you are going to bill her for the work done. Its not your fault she didnt get in touch with you before you started. You dont need a plow customer who is most likely going to let you go when some kid comes by and offers to do it for half the money.

She absolutely should pay for your time spent both in transportation time and expense in the tree.

If she doesn't do right by you...put out "the word" on her...and NEVER do anything for her again..!!

It would be interesting to see what kind of quality work (involving climbing) she gets done for free..!!

I've been called off on a job before because someone said they'd do it for free. Never after I started the job though. Sometimes I think it's a case of the person mentioning that they've hired someone to whack their tree and someone else knows someone who'll do it for the firewood and so on and so on. In my case the the lady told me the tree was already down (for free) and she didn't need me to do it. I'd given her a dirt cheap price because it was obvious that she didn't have any money, divorced and she had little kids. Her brother called me 6 months later and said the tree was still there and he wanted to pay for the removal and that I should come next week. Sorry brother, I'm booked. Try me in the spring. This spring the lady called and asked if I could do it. I didn't embarrass her. I just went and took the tree down. she was a nice lady. She shouldn't have lied but I guess she got bad advice and got stupid.
Getting called off when you're in the tree is a whole different business. When I got done I guarantee they'd never call me again. If they did I've got a "stop calling me" ringback that I assign to the weiner customers.

Yep..It's a whole different situation when getting called off before starting..than when you are in the tree..!!

I called off some guys who had started on one of my trees. It was obvious to me the crack heads were way in over their heads and seemed okay with breaking camp. I paid 'em $125.00 for the couple hours(or less) they were here and they loaded up and down road to the crack house they went.

Then I called in a real Professional and was glad to pay him.

You should be paid, and paid well for your time and trouble.

It could end up costing her a lot more if the tree ends up on her roof.

You mentioned about the lady wanting you to bring your insurance papers. Anytime I lose a bid to a real low ball price I always tell the customer that I appreciate the opportunity to bid on there job and rather than trying to compete with the low ball price I remind the customer to make sure they ask for a copy of the other guys liability insurance. That low ball price might sound great but when the hack drops a tree on their house without insurance that price ain't so great after all. Welcome to AS. You just on the other side of town from me.
