I found a Brush Bandit chipper for sale with a BAD Onan 6 cylinder Diesel. Is it hard to find parts for one, never heard of them myself. Would I be better to get another power unit. thanks

From what I was told, it is a good engine. Cummins purchased Onan. That engine overlapped with the Cummins B series. For that reason, Cummins squashed it(overlapping product). Parts are available from Cummins. When I checked about 10 years ago, parts were a little expensive.

Onan designed and built the engine but like said above cummins bought onan. Cummins sold the engine and called it an A series. The 6 cyl will be a 6AT. UPS trucks had a lot of those engines. They make a good diesel engine swap in smaller vehicles like a jeep. They are small for a 6 cylinder at only 3.4 liter.

6AT3.4
Advertised HP 120@3600 rpm
Dry engine weight ( no flywheel or housing) 695lbs or 302 kg
Displacement 3.4l or 210 in2
compression ration 20.5 to 1
firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4

These specs are for the engine with a turbo, if yours doest have that your hp will be less.

Or try a Onan L-634, ser# 53116485. This is in a 1990 Bandit 100 with a single pair of blades and a studded top feed wheel, the likes of which I have only seen on old whole tree chippers.
This was one of the most odd Bandit chippers I have ever seen. All that power and just one line of blades. It makes no sense.

I would replace it with a small Kubota diesel, or maybe a small Cummins. Of course, some adapting will be necessary.

Maybe find a 300 Ford gas power unit. Its should be about the same size as that Onan and will be pretty cheap if you can find a complete one.
