Optimum diameter for harvesting firewood?

The bigger the better! Just not big enough to give me a hernia. Our splitter stands up horizontally for the big chunks. No it's not fun wrestling them, but I'm in the woods to make lots of firewood. We cut and split everything before loading it so that we don't have to handle the big chunks twice.

We have 12 acres and start with leaners and knock-downs. Ash, Birch, Hornbeam, Maple, and Red Oak.

Still not cutting enough to thin the woods for optimal growth. We were told rule of thumb was up to four cords to thin an acre, then you can harvest a cord per acre per year. We don’t burn anywhere near that much.
