Got my husky 51 back today.. i have never even run this saw it was my dads and he had it in a pawn shop for a few months..he give me the tiket and told me to do "whatever" with it...cost me 37.50 for a 51 husky that put me in shok when i saw the condition..its brand new..hasnt ever even thrown a chain..it still shiny...but ne ways it has a 34 oregon chain on it..looks as if its been sharpened down about a quarte of the way... i put a new fuel lin eon it n went to cuttin with it.. it dosent want to hook into the wood...its ohh so slow as well...i think the depth gauges need to be lowered but i have never done thi t a chain before.. I know i nee a small flat file..Whats the best way to aproach this job?

Find out from the Oregon web site ( http://www.oregonchain.com ) the proper depth you need for your specific chain like .025 and get a depth gauge tool at the below link or search google.com for the words...

oregon depth gauge tool price

(Using the word "price" finds web sites selling a product rather than those "discussing the subject".)

Also look through the online "Oregon Maintenance and Safety Manual" at the following link and it should say which depth gauge tool you need to use for your chain and should also say how to use the tool.

If the chain has 3/4 left, it should still cut without changing depth....
Are you sure it is sharp?
Perhaps a wisit to the lokal shop or someone with a bit experiance could help you learn.

Think about how much you will use it, and if it is worth the cost of tools.
An experianced logger or dealer can help you maintain the chain if you want.
If you only file 3-5 times a year it will take forever to get good, it needs a lot of practice.

Is the chain 34LG, or 34SL with the bumper tie straps?

If it is SL it will probably never cut very good, even when charp.

Both these chain are "low profile", and even if your chain is the LG, I think you would be better off with either Oregon LP or Stihl RS.

Yah..its the antikickback 34... but i have the standard 34 on my 136...it not that much better...I am just not satisfied with 34 chain at all. I sharpen probably every 3 days on my working saws..but i have been practicing on old chains that are layin around..Ive got a good hang on it and i alwaws use good clean files...never used a depth gauge tool befor...il talk to my local saw shop n see what he can do....I want to swap both my saws over to 21LP...as SawTroll suggested....any one got any comments on the performance of 21LP?

Good practice is to sharpen the chain after 1-2 tanks of fuel ;)
