This is my first post, but I been following the forums for about a year.

I have 3 - 009s and a MS260. I have several 16" Picco chains that I use on my 009s.

What I would like to do is run the picco chains on my 260. I went to the local Stihl dealer and they say it's not possible.

My parts list shows a 3/8" 7 tooth rim sprocket for the 260 with part #0000 642 1240. So, I should just be able to have him order that.

For the bar, (16") what should I use. The dealer says the oiling holes wont match up on the Picco bars with a 260?? What part number bar??

Thanks.

The part number for the sprocket I listed is 3/8" picco.

The choices in the MS 260 parts list are:

.325 7 Tooth
.325 8 Tooth
3/8" Picco 7 Tooth
3/8" Picco 8 Tooth
3/8" 7 Tooth

But the bar won't work??

How much grinding was needed to get the 3005 series bar to install over the bar stud bosses? The 3003 series bars fit the 026/MS260 and are available in 3/8-.050 sizes. No problem installing 3/8 low profile chain on this saw, but is it sensible to do it? Do you think the smaller cutting teeth will yield an increase in cutting speed to make the expense of the required parts worthwhile? The only reason I could think of to do this would be if you have LOTS of small chain. I bet the 026 would cut like a scalded cat with 3/8 low profile chain, but it already does this with the standard .325" chain.

not only that, but it is .370 pitch..slightly smaller than .375....prolly not a good idea to do that. but if the chain and sprocket don't show abnormal wear, so what I reckon...

No way will lo pro chain keep up with .325 or .375, esp square chisel. But it will be smoother.

Sometimes you have to push the buttons just to see what they do. Cool. I finished my boneyard MS260 today and had fun tinkering with a fixed jet carburetor.

The Stihl picco bar is available, but not from Stihl (in the USA)... ...
They are in the catalog over here (in 18 and 20" length), and are also listed as standard options for the MS660, with PMX chain.
I understand that combo are often used by log house builders.....

Personally, I think that the .325 narrow kerf is the most effective chain type on the 260, but that option is not offered by Stihl on any model.

RBtree, actually the pitch is the same on both at about .365. I have run it on standard .375 bar and sprocket on my 260. The difference to deal with is the shape of the drive tang. Much smaller on the lo pro. The contact pattern between the web of the sprocket and the drive tang may not be perfect on the rim but seems ok since the chain rails bear on the OD of the rim. Out at the sprocket nose is a little different. Instead of the chain drive links nesting between the sides of the sprocket teeth and bearing over a good part of their surface, the chain is supported by the tips of the sprocket teeth wedging between the upper parts of the drive tangs up near the rivets, and the flanks of the tangs dont contact the sides of the sprocket teeth at all. I expect wear to show up here. I tried to get technical info on exactly why the chains were not completely intercompatable but got no replys from manufactureres. It will work after a fashion but there are potential problems.
