Hi all!

I finally have some pictures to share. We did this 90' white oak removal this week.

This picture shows me accessing the tree from a red oak that needed some pruning, thanks to my new grapnel! My final tie in point is just out of the picture, about 80' up. (my climbing line is 120' and it stopped about 20' up!)

Without boring you with the details, we used the red oak to pendulum the limbs out of the white oak. (Note the orange working line). We sent some pretty good sized sections from over the house and over the fence. I wish I had a video camera!

Oh well, I wish the news was good about this job. This was one of those that nothing happened without effort. It was quite possible worst job I've ever done. I missed the notch on the stick and it caught in the red oak, so I had to do another 75' ascent to free it. It wedged solid (we tried pulling it with the truck)

We left the job in the dark after getting the top down by 2:30.

The pantin, ascender and distal hitch made the job so much easier. I only wish I had static line to enter the tree.

Thanks!

Dan

I was waiting to see if you had any more pics before replying, but I had to say that the view from your office is Fantastic! I may have to set that picture as my desktop background. :D

Awesome setup there, Dan. I miss those huge 80'-100'+ trees in N.C. I rarely get above 60'- 70' here. From the ground it looks like you have plenty of room to bomb it out, but the perspective is a lot different from 80'! At least you had a good landing zone for roping stuff down.

The Fly rope isn't expensive, Sherrill has it for $99 for 150'. For those trees I'd think 200' would be better though. Sean, are you stocking the Fly in 200' hanks yet?
I picked up a leftover 150' rope from my local Vermeer guy last month. It was a Sherrill branded XTC and I like it a lot. Seems even more static than the Fly. I have to be careful and not tie into anything bigger than about 4" diameter or else there is absolutely no give to it at all. But I'm a lightweight and like tying in high anyway. :p I'm swapping between the XTC and Fly on my tall trees now, 110' Blue Streak on smaller trees and removals.

Hi Dan,Nice photos! The Asheville area is,in my opinion, some of the most beautiful country the eastern U.S has.Are you close to the Biltmore House,Chimney Rock or the Parkway?I hope to be in that area soon

Hey Mikey,

Biltmore House is here in Asheville, Chimney Rock is about 30 minutes away and the Parkway runs right through the middle.

Let me know when you will be in town!

Dan

I look like an ant wearing a hard-hat.

Dan forgot to mention how steep the sloop was that we were swinging this oak into. It was steep. Evertime you set something down (ropebag, chainsaw) it would roll ten feet or so down the hill. I am glad we don't have too many days like that.

Paul.
