I pinched a bar and chain the other day and now the chain drags when you pull it along the bar by hand. I can't really see what is bent but I know its not a bar problem because I put another chain on and it slides around the bar nicely with the saw off. I am thinking it is one of the tangs on the drive links but can't really see much out of line. Should this chain just be junked?

Naturally I would never get myself into a situation to pinch a bar, but if I had done it, and if it wan't clear how to get the damaged links to fit I would removed those links and use the chain on a shorter bar.

Just put the chain on and rev it up. The link will wear itself straight in a few hundred revolutions. Done it a hundred times.
Get back to work, you're burning daylight.

If I had done it, I would have pinched it enough the chain would not move at all, making the clutch complain. And would have had to take the chain off and deal with it.

double check your bar....slide 1 driver tang up and down bar...other wise you can take out the temper on the pinched spot, and it'll turn blue, then wear.

Not that I'd ever admit it, but it usually works (so long as you haven't thown the chain and dinged up dozens of tangs)!!!

I don't fix customer chains like that though ;)

I've used Mike's technique a few times. It will not help the life of your bar or chain, but it will get you cutting again in a hurry.

File

Just happened to me also about a week ago. I just filed her down and double checked the smoothness of it to make sure it was sliding correctly. If the chain is about shot anyways? Get rid of it, less hassle buddy...:chainsaw: Also, just for safetys sake, make sure you really inspect that chain. It might not just be a twisted tang, it could be the chain where it is linked together pinched and has weakened the rivets that hold it together. Just an fyi... Seen that a time or two...

Nothing makes me madder than having a "dream" chain - limbing up a tree and then throwing it. Thrashing a bunch of teeth. Sometimes it will also burr up the botton side of the chain as well. If so - I will loosen the chain a little and run it until the burr or what ever is catching wears down.
Then I will change my chain because the one I just threw now sucks.
