Got this piston off an 028 with lean damage on the exhaust side. Flipped the saw around a bunch of times at idle and it passed. Noticed the cylinder base screws were finger tight and the gasket was soaked with fuel/oil mix. Could this have caused the damage? Compression was still really good, but on a whim I decided to pull the muffler to inspect. Glad I did before the jug was wrecked.

Other than the piston the saw is in near new shape.

This is officially the easiest saw I've ever taken apart. I had the jug completely off in 10 minutes.

I'll try posting a picture of the piston but that feature hasn't been working lately.

loose jug to base screws would allow air leak into base; could cause it for sure. You will probably get away with cleaning up jug and piston of any galled material, new ring / rings and away you go.

I also have a 028, I have noticed some jugs on ebay but only the jugs. I have been trying to find a place that has the complete kit, piston, jug, rings, pin for the 028. Just to keep it in the back of my mind in case I would need them. Replacing the parts is probably more than what the saw would be worth but I just can't see myself letting the saw go (just something about them). Have you found any places with good pricing on them? I see that cutters has them for $189.

Didn't expect the photo feature to work but there it went. Don't think there is any saving this piston. In any case, at $30-35 for a new one I don't believe it's worth trying to save.

If the saw runs well why not just run it? You said the saw really isn't worth a rebuild. I bought a Jonsey 590 that ran well but pulling the muffler revealed worse piston damage than that. I've run it a couple of years now. I got my money's worth without sinking more into it-perhaps you could too.
